View Full Version : Confusion Over Guts and Burn

I tried to google this, but all I got were lists of pokemon traits >_<
Anyway, I've been wondering why smogon says burning heracross/machamp is a bad thing. I have yet to have my machamp/heracross burned or burn another one, but I'm not sure why I should be afraid to when the time comes. Guts multiplies attack by 1.5 while burn halves the attack... So I'm trying to figure out why burning heracross is a bad thing.
Base attack x 1.5 (Guts) x .5 (Burn) = Base attack x .75
Burning heracross should leave the bugger with 75% of his original attack after guts and burn go through... So, why then is it considered bad to burn heracross? Does guts make him immune to the attack reduction? Or is it something else?

i guess the burn happens then guts is on the stack after it so it cancels the burn reduction???

That's kinda what I've read on Smogon.
This is the main reason people equip Heracross (or other GUTS PKMN) in D/P with Burn orb rather than Toxic orb.
Basically (from what I've read), Guts cancels a burn's attack reduction effect.

uuuh, what exactly does being good at Magic the Gathering have to do with being able to answer technical questions about Pokemon?

magic requires thinking like if u play cards on the stack u have to know how they resolve so it helps ur mind think about hard stuff, and makes it much easier if u get what im saying.

I'll take your word for it (since i don't play magic).

Though (interestinglly enough), Pokemon does that to your brain too. With the evolutions from RBY to DP, so much has changed in building teams (and even individual PKMN) that it seems almost impossible for the target audience (kids of age 12-) to be really good at it.
I'm almost inclined to say that Pokemon is the new Rubix Cube.

no joke the new types its hard to choose which to make a team out of now, because u have so many choices.
good annology with the stack idea. Although I used to be hardcore into magic, I never really thought of pokemon in that way. But it does make sense: one effect must take place before the other

thanx,what is spaming?
Spamming is what you've doing ever since you joined;
over-posting, posting when it's pointless, etc.
Your post was spam. Asking what is spam in a thread about burn and guts is pure spam.
Repeating the same thing as other posts is spam.
Etc.
You can get banned for that; and at this rate, I can assure you WILL get banned.
50 posts average a day.. whoa.
