Mystery Event Is... confusing?

My roommate and I both have ruby/sapphire, and we both did The "Mystery Event is Exciting" thing, and we linked up, and nothing happened. I was wondering what exactly the mystery event is, what it does, and do we NEED an e-reader to do the mystery event?
Also... how would an e-reader benefit someone who has ruby/sapphire now? I know they had those eon tickets before, and they don't do them now... but is there any use for an ereader now?

that is to recieve special downloads not hook up. For example when you go to download for instance the Birth Island ticket, that is when you need to use Mystery Event

dont do mystery event.the chances of you getting something good are slim. its better to find the items ingame
