I have no clue... i know so little Japanese and know nothing about the kanji system, but i read on a site that the "Go" part means something like "perceive" and "understand" and "ku" means "sky". Mr A would know.

ok Ive always believed goten's name means sky but others had disagreed. now I think I have proof -

anyone know what tenchuu means? it means punishment from the heavens. now, what was the belief in the old days about the location of heaven? it was in the clouds and the sky right? ok so notice the word itself - TENchuu. chuu means punishment/to punish/etc. because the word jinchuu means to punish those who did not yet recieve tenchuu. so if TENchuu is punishment from the HEAVENS and heavens is directly related to sky, then goTEN means sky. anyone else agree?

also people seem to disagree that gokou's name doesn't mean monkey. I have proof for that too. if anyone has seen inuyasha - they like to name the characters by their species if they aren't human. for instance, inu means dog and inuyasha is a dog demon. anyway, in one episode they called this little monkey gokuu - which goes along with their naming system. therfore gokou must mean monkey. anyone else agree?

The way I always understood it was that Goten's name translated to something like heaven or afterlife (atleast the "ten part). Goku translated to sky (at least the "ku" part of it). Never thought about it meaning monkey though. Not really sure.

Hmmm....I can finally post again. Anyways, how do we have Goten and Goku meaning sky/heaven, but Gohan means rice.

Goku does mean monkey, one of the reasons they picked the name.

"Anyways, how do we have Goten and Goku meaning sky/heaven, but Gohan means rice."

Well, Gohan's entire name translates to rice, where as only the "ten" part of Goten translates to heaven, and the "ku" part of Goku translates to sky. But it probably was intended to translate the entire name and not just part of it, so Goku probably does translate to monkey.

Well I belive Goku does mean Monkey and Gohan means rice although Kakarot/tto means carrot and rice and carrot are both kinds of food understand?

Well Bulma's family is like this Dr Breifs, Bra and Trunks but what does Bulma mean? Some sort of underwear?

Anyway back to Goten it could mean heaven but the Go could mean like some sort of food but I don't no, what do you think?

Bah, hope I don't get bashed for this. :p

"Anyway back to Goten it could mean heaven but the Go could mean like some sort of food but I don't no, what do you think?"

Well, Go could mean something (like what Mel suggested), however I now get the feeling that Goku and Goten were meant to have the entire word as one translation, and not part of it like the "Go" part and the "ku" or "ten" part separate. So Buushin is probably correct about what he said about Goku meaning monkey since that would be the entire whole word translated.

This topic isn't too old is it? cuz i have something to say in it... i was looking over the net and the japanese word for a monkey is "saru" (now i see where the name for the saiyan ape transformation "oozaru" comes from). little resenblance to the name "Goku". i think it maybe just a name that AT made up...vaguely based off the name of the original character "Son Wukong".

you have to understand many words in japanese mean the same thing. for instance - genki, genkai, youki - all mean spirit. and - ma, youkai, oni - all mean demon, however oni is a specific kind of demon - one with horns.

well what else could it be? iono bout you but the fact that they had a monkey named gokuu in inuyasha and the fact that we have son gokou in DBZ who - you guessed it - can transform into a monkey. and also take into account the fact that at the beginning of DB, AT didn't plan to have gokou be an alien or something like that - which would mean him having a tail and that he transforms into a giant monkey durinig the full moon indicated his name means monkey.

Not sure but i think Inu Yasha came out after Dragonball so they may have named the monkey character in IY (and in the new anime Saiyuki i suppose) after DB Son Goku... although, i'm also thinking that Goku might mean something in japanese associated with monkeys.

If anyone can get me the kanji for the names in question, I'll be glad to check it out.
