View Full Version : Best way to start this game?

Hi all, I think this is my first post for this game... Well, I've been following it since last November or so, but I didn't get to buying any packs or anything until yesterday. The "Competition Pack" supposedly has a Sealed-tourney ready deck, (Or so it says), but is it a good idea to start by building on that, or do Pre-Cons work better as a foundation for a deck? I don't really have the money to go buy a lot of packs, so something solid to start out with for the lowest price is in my best interest. The Competition Pack I got seemed... somewhat like a hard/random deck to play, considering how many different.. "factions" (?) are packed into one deck. I'm guessing it's a better idea to stick with one or two for a coherent deck, like most card games..

Well anyway, this game is just too awesome. The level of strategy involved and the humorous aspects of the game are top-notch! Love every detail of it. I hope this board gets more life in the months to come, and thanks for any opinions provided.

Oh, and I didn't get a good look at the preconstructed decks in the store, so.. how many different decks are there? The boxes all looked the same.. or is it that there's only one "Preconstructed Deck" around so far? Once again, thanks in advance for any and all answers.

Did you attend Gen Con So Cal by any chance?

The Competition pack is not a "deck". It's pretty much the equivalent to 3 boosters, plus staple resources (Greed, Rage, etc) plus a faction card. However there are no foils in the Comp packs.

There are 5 differend Precon Decks, one for each Trade. (Factions are the cards that set your rules for drawing and playing resources not the 5 groups that are in the game. The 5 groups: Warlord, Gearsmith, Rogue, Banker, Arcanist, are Trades or Occupations.)

As far as where to start with the least $$ out of pocket, if you're lucky you can get a box of Comp packs (equal to 2 booster boxes) for about $50 on ebay. That's a deal!

Or, there are Beta cards on ebay that work out to be even cheaper, but the price can fluctuate drastically depending on who's after them on any given day. I've seen them go for $30 a box (24 packs in a box) all the way to $70 a box (though not in a while).

Well that's my $.02 anyway! Good luck, and if you have any more questions just let me know here or on The Spoils forums.

Ah.... I'll get myself a pre-con the next time around, then. (But which one, hm...)

I don't usually attend conventions, so that doesn't apply to me...

Well, thank you for the info, I appreciate it. I'll get back to you if I have any more questions. :)

Edit: How does threshold work? That, and on The Tournament faction card, it says to Pay 4 to put down a resource... so how does one put their first resource down? Does it mean 4 influence..? I understand you start the game with 2 staple resources per player, but even Drawing a card requires payment of 3...Is it payment in Influence, or do I have to use some card's effect to put resources down from my hand? How does it work?

Once again, thanks a lot.

Think of threshold as a question, and that's it. It asks "Do you have this many of this particular resource in play?" If you do, regardless if you've "spent" them already (attached them to your faction card) or not, they are in play so you're allowed to play it if you can pay for it.

Example:

I have 1 Rage resource and 1 Elitism resource and 2 face down cards I played as resources. That's 4 resources total, and I have threshold of 1 Rage and 1 Elitism. If I want to play Plodding Brute (number cost 4, threshold 1 Rage) I can. If I want to play Oversoon Lightfoot (number cost 1, threshold 2 Rage) I can't. If I want to play Heirloom Incinerator (number cost 1, threshold 1 Rage) I could actually play 4 of them. Even if I attached my 1 Rage to "pay" for the first one, I still have threshold for 1 Rage and can pay up to 3 more resources for whatever.

Did that help?

The resource and draw ABILITIES on the faction are optional and can be used just like other abilites. If you look at the faction, the restore and develop are RULES,meaning that they happen automaticly and are free.

Oooh! OK, I think I've got it. Thank you both, that really cleared it up.

I just wish I could watch some people play.. a little bit too broke to attend the NY Comic Con, heh.

Been waiting for that for a while now :P

Trying to get my girlfriend into the game, I think she'd like to play Rogue/Warlord ish play style if she got into the game.

My wife's a strict Warlord player. Forget about much subtlety, she's a smash-mouth-beat-down type all the way!

I have two decks, A GearBanker and a WIP Arcanist OTK.

I love this card game, makes Yu-gi-oh and Magic seem like child's play.

If you need help with anything, most of the pojo goers are willing to help.

Hope you enjoy this game as much as I do.

I think the WIP stands for Work in Progress.

My gf and I were able to get a demo from The Spoils booth at the NY Comic Con. It was awesome! We signed up for the membership (I'm guessing it's for the league?) and got a deck each. I got a Gearsmith deck and my gf got an Arcanist deck for free! I'm surprised she enjoys playing such a precise, control-based deck, though... I also bought her a Rogue deck so she can construct a full deck with those two pre-cons.

We plan to attend the local preview event for Part 2 this weekend.

This game is great! My gf rarely wants to actually play these kind of games, and she said it was easy to learn while also being fun to play. I'm so happy =D

Outstanding! The game really is that easy to learn, but as I'm sure you know, not that easy to master. :)

My wife plays too, and from what I know of couples that don't game together, you and I are waaaaaay ahead in that part of our relationships.

PS: Make sure she knows how much you really like that she plays!

Oh, she knows =D

Whenever I look up games to play, she's the first one I ask if it'll be fun for us to play together. Unfortunately, she's not the type to be keen on reading up on rules and such... She gets bored easily if I try to teach her. <_<

I'm thankful they had a demo station set up for us to try it out
