just receved the gx manga in sj heres pros and cons:

pros:
-the art is simply great! great facial expressions and all!!!
-the plot is very intresting, in this issue a mannamed mr. presely duels sirus and takes a rare card. pres. wins 45 duels in a row and obtains everyones rarest card. but jaden duels him and wins.
-the new monters are great! new e heros include:

e hero woodsman
e hero terra firsma
e hero ocean
along with: cyber dinosour and the dinos from the new dinos rage deck!
- get to see judai thinking of yugi, joey, and kaiba.

cons:
- they gave them the 4 kids names.......
- the duel skipped over 5 turns
-during an unknown time period in gx. syrus is a red so we dunno..... everyone knows eachother though
- no edo, or kenzan, or misawa (so far)

so there u go
dissuss

Thanks Radman. But the fact that they're giving characters who don't even have 4Kids names yet new names is very disheartening. Mr. Presley? Khaaaaaaaaaan---I mean Viiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiz!

And I knew that Elemental Hero The Earth would be renamed 'Terra Firma'. Just knew it.

...So did they just cut out the whole thing about Ryuga being a teacher-in-training needing his 50th win to become a professor by the rules of the Academia? I am quite disappointed in Viz's choice to dub everything and make Shonen Jump look like a joke.

Also please oh please tell me they did not use the dub catchphrases... If anyone got their game on or threw down face-downs I believe I shall cry. :(

You know, it's gonna be really hard explaining exactly why Kouyou is getting picked up from the Tokyo Dome....

Oh, and there's the small omakes Kageyama-sensei has drawn in GX Vol. 1 about his experience drawing the manga...

EDIT: Wait..."a rare card"? Ryuga just took their cards in general.

did the book state that a free card is coming for the february issue for gx?

Oh, and there's the small omakes Kageyama-sensei has drawn in GX Vol. 1 about his experience drawing the manga...

O.O What happens in those Horoko?

Well, I'm glad there was no 'Get Your Game On', but it certainly doesn't sound like a straight translation to me (not even when you exclude the pre-dub names). *sigh*

I assume it at least says at the start:Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki in the original Japanese manga) or something? If not, well....

Horoko
11-19-2006, 04:12 AM
They're basically 4 panel omake that the good sensei has added in. There are 9 in total and are at the end of each chapter. The first one involves the call he had with Takahashi-sensei and the last one involves him helping with YGO-R.

Ryusaki
11-19-2006, 06:21 AM
And they're hard to Americanise I take it...? Out of interest, do these omakes replace the nice little pictures that usually come at the end of a YGO manga chapter?

I ought to pick myself up a GX manga vol. 1. Unfortunately I doubt Ideal will get them until until the Christmas post rush has begun and it becomes hazardous to order...

And as I state once again, I am very disappointed that Viz are giving manga-only characters dubstyle names. Very disappointed indeed. Mr. Presley rocks and rolls with Jaden I presume. Viiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiz!

Horoko
11-19-2006, 09:20 AM
Well, it's just that when dealing with the manga-ka, who is Japanese, goes to Tokyo Dome, which is in Japan, and is a fan of the Lions, which is a Japanese baseball team, it's pretty hard to convience people that having clearly "English" names in the manga is justified without good reason.

Oh man, I can think of 5 instances in which the names of the character will simply change dialogue/content completely. This was a very bad decision on Viz.

I was sorta surpirsed that the Japanese manga-only names were not left intact. I don't understand why VIZ apparently did not perform a somewhat faithful translation.

As a sorta unrelated question, how does VIZ romanize the name of the Korean kid in Hikaru no Go (Hon Suyon)?

Ooooh...HARSH.

So... they've left the original manga more or less like it was (gore, dark atmosphere, Japanese names) and edit the GX version like there's no tomorrow..... I smell 4Kiddies at work here people.

Ok, just as a note to everyone who hasn't read and is complaining.

After the Victory Dragon section, there's an inserted page which lists every card used (that was seen) in the manga. It not only does that, it gives their Japanese names and for the most part official translations of the names from Japanese to english as well as the japanese.

As for the story, I would have to say that aside from Dub names, the story is in tact. Nothing has been changed as far as I can tell. Mr. Ryuga's motivation is the same as before. He needs 50 wins to become a teacher and then wants to work his way up in the school and try to take a foothold in the dueling world.

There are no dub-slangs and messages. No "throw down"s or "Get your game on!"s.

Also, every single time I see your name, I misread it as "koopa"... >_>;

Hi, I'm Yūgi's Black Magician's friend, Admiral Johnny Ryūzaki. When YBM died of a heart attack this afternoon I was contacted via email with information to be given to the POJO community. Yūgi's Black Magician has asked me to tell you he thanks Ryūsaki, Horoko, Familiar Stranger etc. for their informatize and funny posts that managed to keep him alive until now, but sadly recent events have caused him great pain. His final words were, "B***tards!!!"

Maybe so, but its pretty hard to get 'Mr. Presley' out of 'Professor Ryuga' XD

Anyway, I'm still interested as to whether they kept the 'aniki' parts.

1. Mr. Ryuga's name has not been changed!
2. Syrus calls Jaden "Bro"
3. Chazz is referred to by his last name, Princeton.

Ryu = Ryuu = Dragon

Ga = Kiba = Fang

Dragon Fang. It alluded to the fact that he played Dinosaurs, no doubt. (Kyoryuu.) Mr. Dracon, Mr. Draco, Mr. Drake, Mr. Drakfeng. That's the Capcom logic at least. (IE: Gyakuten Saiban's translation.)

You can't just plug in any name in a dictionary and expect to show up with something. O_o

I don't do this much, but can I ask you if you wouldn't...or at least, hold off on it for a while?

Well, first, it wasn't my translation. That was done completely by Symbion back when he was still on my team. However, my version will be/is slightly different. (I caught a lot of the translation mistakes and such.)

Vicman
11-21-2006, 06:56 PM
Horoko, it's not an analysis, actually. What I did is typed up both versions and placed them side-by-side; I.E. the unofficial text is in black, then the VIZ text follows in green, etc.

It's already typed, but I won't release it until you want me to, Horoko :)

By the way, I'd like to see your re-translation; that way I'll put THAT in another color if the text is different from the first :)

I just read the chapter in the new Shonen Jump, and aside from the ugly dub names the chapter was right in line with the Japanese version.

Ryuga retained his original name, which makes me wonder why the original poster of this topic went out of his way to lie and say the name was changed. Oh...what people will do to try and gain popularity on this site....

I'd love to put up my re-translation of the chapters up to 9, but I'm waiting for Graphic Novel 1 to grace my steps.

By the way, was the change in names specified in any way? Like, did they say in a "Hey, we did it, but it's only because we love money!" way like they sort of do with some of their other properties?

VIZ mentions the original Japanese names of the cards in an insert after the chapter, BUT VIZ does not mention the original Japanese names of the characters.

VIZ may mention the characters' original names in a later issue.

At one chapter per month, Horoko, if the GX Volume 1 contains 12 chapters, it would take a year to get to Volume 1.

Here are the cards as listed in page 338 of Shonen Jump 1 January 2007...

Cards with altered names
* Elemental Hero Wildman -> Elemental Hero Wildheart (Page 318)
* Dongame (Mafia Boss Turtle) -> Don Turtle (Page 319)
* Choshinkayaku (Super Evolution Machine) -> Ultra Evolution Pill (Page 319)
* Hyper-Hammerhead -> Hyper Hammerhead (No hyphen) (Page 324)
* Jikudaki (Earth Crush) -> Smashing Ground (Page 325)
* Another Fusion -> Alternate Fusion (Page 328)
* Elemental Hero Forestman -> Elemental Hero Woodsman (Page 328)
* Shikabane No Numa (Swamp of the Living Dead) -> Swamp of the Fallen (Page 328)
* Elemental Hero The Earth -> Elemental Hero Terra Firma (Page 330)

Cards with the same names
* Winged Kuriboh (Page 304)
* Elemental Hero Bubbleman (Page 305)
* Patroid (Page 308)
* Elemental Hero Sparkman (Page 318)
* Polymerization (Page 321)
* Hero Barrier (Page 322)
* Elemental Hero Ocean (Page 324)
* Shield Strike (Page 328)

Some of those translations are a tad sketchy. (Like "Mafia Boss Turtle".)

Vicman

Anyway, the page also lists the said names in Japanese. For some reason, I cannot find many of the kanji characters for the said names.

Since Wiktionary shows meanings of Kanji (I.E. with the Don Turtle name), it can be helpful to decipher the meanings of the names.

Horoko

ワイルドマン
首領亀(ドン・カメ)
超進化薬
ハイパーハンマーヘッド
地砕き
アナザー・フュージョン
フォレストマン
屍の滑
ジ・アース

I don't know if for Don Turtle, they were simply translating the interprutation of "Don" ("Mafia Boss") or the actual translation of "Shuryou" ("Leader"/"[Group/Gang] Boss.") Either way, it's sort of weird, considering "Don Kame" (Don Turtle) is written above the card in furigana.

Also, "yaku" in "Chou Shinka Yaku" means "medicine." More in specific, "pill." (Unless it's the other reading "kusuri", which in words like, "Kusurigui" mean something different.) Are you sure they had "Machine" or "Medicine"?

It's kind of weird that they opted to go for more literal translations, but went for "Swamp of the Living Dead." "Ikeru Shikabane" would be "Living Dead." But the kanji by its lonesome is "corpse" or "the dead." Not that it's wrong or anything...just less literal, in retrospect.

It stated "Machine" - Which may have been a typo.

Yeah, as Page 302 indicates, the man is indeed "Mr. Ryuga."

Radman, Crowler said "precisely," NOT "Presley" - "Precisely" is a word in the English-language...

http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/Precisely

"Main Entry: pre·cise·ly
Function: adverb
: EXACTLY <precisely two o'clock> -- sometimes used as an intensive <was popular precisely because he was so kind>
"

By the way, Radman, you should use proper English when posting on Pojo Forums. Proper English makes the poster look professional and clever :)
