Nothing's happened yet, Naruto still likes Sakura and Hinata's still admiring (?) Naruto from afar. Well that's what I've made of it anyway, correct me if I'm wrong please.

Other than that, them being a couple is completely fan-made. But fans DO leave an impression on the author.

The fans seem to want both of these, but Kishimoto's not falling through.

The one time Sakura REALLY thinks Naruto matures up and she starts to respect him is in their meeting at the start of Naruto 2. However, that is short lived by the fact that Naruto claims he has developed even more perverted ninjutsu.

And after the chunin exams, Hinata barely say's a sentence in the manga.

The order of main characters (Heroes only):

Tier 1: Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke (Naruto 1 only)
Tier 2: Ino, Shikamaru, Kakashi, Rock Lee, Sai (Naruto 2 only)
Tier 3: Neji, Kiba, Choji, Gai-sensei, various Satoosa/Sannin level ninjas, Gaara
Tier 4: Iruka, Konohamaru, the rest of the Konoha Rookies, Temari and Kankuro
Tier 5: Everyone else.

This is not based on me measuring manga time, but more a feel for the characters. Rock Lee and Shikamaru are the second line ninjas, the fans love them in some manner that keeps them around, Ino is directly Sakura storyline and nothing else.

The other Rookies don't get enough screen in the manga to rate them too much, however this will hopefully change soon in the Manga.

This is one of the Naru Filler saving graces, people like the Tier 3/4 characters that aren't Konohamaru.
