GX Manga Chapter 10 ~ The Meeting of Destiny

Otherwise known as "Maybe our main character needs a history after 2 years either on air or in print..."

This chapter seems to open not with a duel, but with the revelation that Professor Hibiki, the Osiris Red dorm head, has a past with a kindly Red duelist or professor who may have entrusted Judai with his deck... This interests me greatly so I wanted to put up a topic to discuss it when the chapter is put up today. :)

So Judai is getting some backstory? FINALLY. I just love how quick it took the GX manga to give Judai something while "ahem" the Anime has given him little to no backstory as of yet.

So we learn more about Hibiki (whom I may just have fallen in love with, she's very hot for an anime character, lol.) and this mysterious guy?

I wonder who he is and what he was to Judai?!

Her position was given last chapter as "Osiris Red 1st Year Homeroom Teacher Hibiki," and you can tell by the hue of her uniform that she is wearing a red coat. She appears to be considered the head of the dorm, as she was the one grading their exams and submitting them for records. She is, in fact, the second female character introduced in the GX manga. Before that, the uninterested Asuka was challenged for the title of Miss Academia by the vain Mary Sue beauty queen, Seika Kohinata. Asuka won the title against her wishes, lol.

Awesome, a female dorm head. She looks like the type that would throw a crazy party with her students complete with lots a sake, lol. Daito was written out eh? Poor lad, it seems that all of the anime storylines are not going to be in the manga (which is very good, lol) so stuff like Manjyome Thunder and stuff won't be in here.

I'm liking this manga more and more!

Same here, I really hate the GX dubbed names, and although we have a somewhat pure version of the original (Maximillion Pegasus? wth?) GX may get a forced namechange or something. I could honestly seeing a travesty such as that occuring, seeing as where Konami and UDE want to target GX.

Lol, I am sorry I was only trying to be helpful. I am also happy about Professor Hibiki... I have wanted girls in Osiris Red since Turn 1 of the anime (if you have ever seen fanart or icons of a Red girls uniform it is more flattering and very pretty imo), and for it to gain a female dorm head in the manga and a potential female student in the anime within a month of eachother is a dream come true! :)

He's probably a great man, and an excellent duelist.

Which in any shonen anime, sets him up to die or vanish, only to reappear later as a very evil villian. I could see GX pulling a generic idea like that out...but remember, the manga is better then the anime, so it's a lot less predictable.

I mean....Who predicted Judai backtsory?

Good chapter overall. What a great guy. It's very sad that he had to die, but it at least gives Judai more of a reason to duel this time. I was also right, the whole Yugi part of the GX manga was retconed. This is a much better backstory to Judai (and even some Manjyome in there too!) then the shabby anime version that involved Neo Spacians and what-not.

God I love the GX manga....

A story chapter exploring Hibiki and her brother, Judai and Manjoume's connection to Duel Spirits, and why Judai is so connected to the deck he was entrusted with was very unexpected and a very fine chapter. I hope that they continue this thread next chapter...

According to Horoko, this chapter revealed that Professor Hibiki's full name is Midori Hibiki and her brother was Kouyou Hibiki, a linguistic pun; Kouyou means Autumn Leaves while Midori means Green.

I will try to summarize it...

Summary below (highlight to see):
Judai and Sho meet with Professor Hibiki on an errand carrying boxes from her office. They are both saddened by something and Sho notices a framed picture of a young man holding a dueling trophy on her deck before they leave... Outside, Manjoume confronts them and says something that deeply pains Judai, but he returns to smiling after a dark saddened moment, then walks away with his expression heartbroken.

A flashback begins of 10 year old (?) Judai in the hospital on crutches, his leg in a cast. He trips towards the floor, but an older man with a kindly smile and glasses catches him by the arm and keeps him from falling... It is Professor Hibiki's brother, Kouyou. Kouyou sits with Judai at a park bench in the hospital talking, smiling as the young Judai pouts childishly. A casually dressed Hibiki greets her brother (and seemingly Judai for the first time), at which point Judai realizes Kouyou is a patient there as well. He and Judai sit on a hospital bed crosslegged in pajamas as Kouyou teaches him and duels with him to pass the time and make the stay there easier for Judai, and Hibiki smiles at the two of them having fun together. Judai does not seem to be able to beat him, and in the end of the scene, Kouyou gives his deck to Judai, to which the boy is delighted. One of the cards paid special attention to is The Earth, and Kouyou tells him about spirits in the deck (Winged Kuriboh appears to be his own duel spirit). Judai appears to be leaving the hospital...

Later, a recovered Judai runs to the hospital to meet his friend and discovers him talking with Hibiki in his room. He is smiling at the concerned Hibiki. Judai stands unnoticed outside the door as the talk grows more serious and it becomes obvious that Kouyou has a very serious illness... Judai stares at the ground as the panels shift to black, then to a dueling arena where Kouyou is dueling and defeating a duelist with The Earth. He and Hibiki leave, but a young boy in slacks and a dress shirt stops him, asking for his autograph. Kouyou signs it for him, then picks up a card from the ground at Winged Kuriboh's prompting. He decides to give the card to the boy as well, smiling as a young Manjoume runs off giddily. He sweatdrops as Hibiki catches him talking to Winged Kuriboh and glares at him suspiciously, and Kouyou chuckles nervously. Hibiki turns to continue walking off, but Kouyou stops in mid-step, eyes wide and expression pained. Hibiki looks over her shoulder to find her brother collapsed.

Judai runs to the arena upset that he is late to see his friend duel, but stops and looks through the crowd at the sound of an ambulance. His eyes widen as he sees it being loaded; he shoves his way through the crowd as he realizes Kouyou is on a gurney with an oxygen mask over his mouth, a distraught Hibiki at his side. Judai yells and runs through the crowd, but he is too late as the ambulance drives off with a crying child in pursuit as the chapter ends.

I was kinda disappointed that they completely took out Yugi here and replaced him with this guy. It severs the two series completely, and honestly I don't like that. I mean, aside from people playing Duel Monsters, there's no other connection between the two. That's.... kinda weird, don'tcha think? Or is it just me?

What did Manjyome say to make Judai so upset? Does he even know what happened to that guy, who I guess was his idol? ...Does he know that he and the red dorm leader are/were related? Will he find out in the next chapter?

Unless I am mistaken, it does not completely rule out Yugi. Kouyou gave Judai his E-Hero deck with The Earth; that does not necessarily mean he gave him the Winged Kuriboh that became his duel spirit, unless that is explored in the next chapter. Judai already had the E-Heroes in the anime before he ran face-first into Yugi, lol. Kouyou is also the guy from the previous chapter's flashback; he was the one who entrusted Judai with the E-Hero deck and told him about duel spirits for the first time. It could be said Judai already knew about duel spirits in the anime if you wanted to connect their plots, since he was not frightened or even truly shocked by the Winged Kuriboh haunting him from the first episode of the anime onward...

Heh, I like Kouyou as a character. There's never been a kind of "nice without motivation" type character in any of the YGO series (GX, R, or original) to date. Kouyou is actually a very rare character in anime in general. He's kind but strong to an extent, but not quite the amazing person Yugi is.

I like this backstory, and although it erases Yugi from the GX manga canon it makes more sense then Yugi randomly showing up with Duel Spirits and such, and gives Judai a better reason to duel at all.

I have gained a lot of respect for E-Heroes this day.

Ah, but a non-speaker of Japanese may (horrendously) mispronounce it as Kou-you, as in the ENglish word 'you'.

I know if Ryūsaki can't stand Joe Yammazaki, then I can't stand mispronounciations.
