Besides the endorsement (and financial investment) of most famous players in the Magic community, Jon Finkel (Pro Tour/Individual/Team/National/ and World Champion) and David Williams (all time #6 top Poker money winner and Magic Pro Player, and the personal investment of Peter Adkison, former CEO of Wizards of the Coast, Tenacious Games is introducing The Spoils™ with an unprecedented Open Beta Launch: giving away almost 2.5 Million cards, running as many as 2000 free tournaments and supporting larger tournaments with $60,000 in prize money, culminating in the $10,000 Open Beta Championships held Oct. 29th in NYC.
See www.thespoils.com "
I have not tested this game yet. Scott Gerhardt has had a tourney at his store, and said the game is awesome, and everyone loved it. So I make a section on Pojo for it. ;-)
Has anyone else here tried it yet?

OMG this game was so amazing! I played it at Scott Gerhardt Rancho Cucamonga store last night and I had so much fun even though I lost 3 of the 4 rounds.
ANYONE who has an chance to play this game should do so. Not one person hated this game last night, I want more and more Spoils!

Played again tonight at Shuffle and Cut RC and I am quickly realizing that Gearsmith is the amazing almost as much as Banker and Anarchist. This game has so much unbelievable potential that if this game fails then card games are doomed.

the game is very slick. Played in a beta event in madison, ended up top 8, but unfortunately they cut to top 4 (cursed 16 players [one more and it would have been top 8]) for the draft session. I really could have used that sexy sexy custom xbox 360. ^_^
faction wise: Bankers = uber in sealed. Ghostly Auditor can absolutely change a game by doing damage just once, i should know, i lost because of that T_T. Arcanists and forget, assassination, and covert are very slick. I personally <3 gearsmiths for the 1337-speak and the over all feel of the faction.

only 16 people for the XBox360? It's kinda suprising why that isn't higher...
Yea, I <3 the spoils. Great mechanic. Great art and flavor text. Great gameplay. What more can you really ask for in a game? I'm just really glad that my store is fully supporting the game (holding sealed events at least every 2 weeks for Open Beta, and possibly adding some constructed there too). Plus, I love looking at my set of Top 8 Foil Resources from PAX. :D

No, I believe to get your free pack, you just have to register on their forum and give them your info.
It'll be a while until they actually get around to sending out those packs. After Gencon, then PAX, then re-shipping product to all participating stores, people who get the free pack are kinda on the bottom of the priority list. :(

This game is incredible and the rules are fun, challanging and easy to understand. Its so fun in fact, I have almost all the cards from the Beta set when i went to indy.
Bankers are hands down the best in sealed format. but in constructed... Rougues and bankers are a close second. Gears are great swarmers but are weak on their own. and there are many great decks out now already.

Theres some pretty crazy things in this game, and its not even realy out.Look at this thing
Emergency Obfuscation 3 (and 3 deception)
You may play this card whenever you could play a tactic.
While this card is in play, both players switch seats. Both players are in control of their opponent's side. If the game ends, the owner of the winning deck wins the game.
At the start of your turn, you must put a token on this card.
At the end of your turn, if there are at least 2 tokens on this card, destroy it.

I am VERY excited about The Spoils. I strongly encourage everyone to go check it out. Ask your local hobby shop to run a tourney.......it's free for them and you!!!:D A great way to drum up some support for this awesome game. I honestly believe it has the potential to be the biggest game on the tcg market. The industry "players" backing it have great track records and are highly respected in their circles. I can't wait for the official release in November and see the impact it will have on the gaming community! The only thing that may stand in it's path is a little known TCG coming out called World of warcraft............lol I am only kidding of course, WoW is probably the most popular game ever and the cross platform idea was a good one. That and UDE are backing it up. It could prove to be some stiff competition. Thing is though, licensed products such as that seem to "blow over" rather quiclky and gamers know that. No body wants to be sitting with binders full of useless cardboard. The Spoils has great gameplay, art, flavor, depth and the backing and marketing strategy to make it work and for a VERY long time.:) Peace!

I see it like this:
WoW is based off of a popular game,so was the pokemon tcg
The Spoils is an original game with solid gameplay and a reason to play(cash tournaments),just like Magic:The Gathering
So if we look at it that way, which game lasted longer?Magic did.I think that the WoW card game will only be popular as long as the WoW computer game is popular. The Spoils on the other hand is shaping up to be the new M:tG,I could see myself buying spoils packs 10 years from now, thats how good the spoils is,to me anyway.

What I meant was that, although made by the same company,Pokemon and Magic were similar to WoW and The Spoils. So far, games that are based on games(pokemon) or anime(Inu-Yasha,FMA) dont seem to last as long as tcgs with theyre own "world".Magic has lasted what,16 years while pokemon, while still played,is pretty dead right now,and has been since WotC lost the rights to it.

Seeing how people have saying this game is amazing, I must play it. Also with the cash prizes maybe my lazy store will try to hold some tournaments.

I'm so angry I missed the demo at my store.
I've heard some people compare it to VS. is this game really good enough to take control of the market?
doc8466
09-18-2006, 03:35 PM
It is designed to do that very thing CED.
Allow me to introduce myself-
I am a The Spoils Judge and one of the CotD writers. (for the moment anyway...we'll see how it pans out!)
I started with The Spoils at GENCON, loved it, and ended up volunteering for them doing demos for about a day and a half.
Since then, I've returned to Annapolis MD where I've run 8 (?) Open Beta events including a $1K event. (that's another story....) And I'll be running at least another 6-8 before Open Beta season culminates in my area on 22 Oct with a $1.5K tourney at Dream Wizards in Rockville MD.
If you haven't read The Spoils introduction article by Scott Gerhardt, do so now! It's a great summary of the game.
Let it be known now... Tenacious games started 5 years ago with the goal of creating a game that is better than MtG. With that goal, they started by asking themselves, what do great games have going for them and what do they have working against them? How can we fix the negatives?
5 years later, we have The Spoils.
Yes, it's marketed as a TCG where the "T" stands for Tournament, not tradable. However, let that not disuade you from playing it casually. It plays just as well in any environment, but at a competitive level, it's going to be better than any other game because of it's design to minimize luck and maximize strategy. If you're not into the math, percentages and stats that go into playing at a pro level, The Spoils is still a blast with some friends or at your local shop on a Saturday afternoon.
If you're not good enough to be a pro (insert any passtime/sport/whatever that you could be making a living at here) does that mean you're not going to do it? I hope not...
And here's the final kicker: YOU CAN TRY IT FOR FREE AND GET FREE CARDS FROM THE COMPANY! Does it get any better than that? I think not.
Anyone who hasn't, go sign up on The Spoils web site and remember to select the option for a free pack of cards. Then hop onto the forums there and join in with a community of over 1900 people (Open Beta started 01 August!) who are actively digging into what we think still needs a bit of tweaking (yes, we're affecting the future of this game by participating in Open Beta) and all the talk about card interaction, rules questions (did anyone mention that the rule book for this game is 2 pages long when printed on standard printer paper?) deck construction etc etc etc!
On the web site you can download demo decks and the rules. So even if you can't get to an Open Beta event, you CAN see if all the speculation that The Spoils will be the next big game and possibly the biggest one day is all it's cracked up to be.
All you have to lose is a couple minutes of internet surfing! :D
Hope to see you on The Spoils boards or at an Open Beta event near me!
I'm out!

No way! I'm the bald white guy who wears The Spoils Judge t-shirt!
I virtually guarantee you'll like it. I'd be more than happy to demo it with you, and if you like it (you will!) you can jump in on one of our *FREE* tourneys. Even if that's not your "cup of tea", you'll get the 6 packs of cards and get to know the regular players.
I won't be back to Dream Wizards for about a week and a half, but keep an eye on either the Dream Wizards web site for a list of days/times or the calendar you can find at the top of the forums on The Spoils web site.
Let me know who you are when you do the demo!

You should all give the Call of Cthulhu Card Game a try. It's basically the game this one seems quite influenced by in terms of game mechanics (my personal opinion, looks like most of the 'innovative new ideas' are a bit derivative of it.) and it's established enough that you have plenty of variation, a huge cardpool to draw upon, and 7 factions to choose from rather than 1.
That said, I do like the theme of this one, seems less heavy handed. And they're giving away free stuff, which is amicable. Might give it a try :D

No offense, but the two aren't even remotely similar. In CoC you're trying to win three stories and there's a set order that each story is resolved. OK, maybe the whole speed thing in Spoils has shades of Terror and Combat phases, but it's much more open ended than that.
If anyone wants to know what Spoils is like (i.e., where its roots come from) in terms of gameplay, try this:
1) Take Magic, subtract specific types of mana for costs to play cards and abilities
2) Add the Stronghold/Faction idea from Legend of the Five Rings
3) Add a rule that allows you to start with resources already in play
4) Add an inherent rule on the Factions that allows you to utilize excess resources to either play more resources or draw more cards
5) Add a mulligan rule that allows you to choose your starting hand (in a limited way, certainly)
6) Add the threshold idea (shades of Battletech, Harry Potter, etc.)
7) Add other ideas from Battletech; multiple attacks per turn, attacking locations, the idea of speed in combat (though Spoils is much better realized).
Voila! There's yer Spoils. Not the most original game in the world (save the world it's actually set in, which is very original), but it's taken the best mechanics from good games to make, what I believe is a truly excellent game.

i, after researching this game more, have decided not to play.
why?
one: the art work.
sure its only concept art- but its soooo odd. its got lots of blood/gore (which i could handle...) but the thing that REALY turned me off: i saw some card where a bunch of dudes were sucking like, the sperm out of a dragon, and then the next card had the dudes pushing a seringe into a dudes stomach...and the flavor text said that was the sperm :o
two: its 3rd party. and its new. magic and yugioh controll the market right now, and i dont see this going anywhere. look at duelmasters for example- much better game than yugioh, yet it never became very popular cause people had allready put too much $$$ into yugioh or magic....
i dont care how good a game it is- im not wasteing my money on a game unless i know its gonna last, or has play value that i can play with after the gam edies. which, imo, card games dont have, (but minis do...reason im sorta consentrating on dreamblade at the moment...)
you'll can go ahead and play. sorry if i sound/rude/w/e....
ill wait and see where this goes. ive lost faith in 3rd party developers...:(
mabey this game might regain my faith...

I hope, if given the chance to play in a free Open Beta event, you still give it a try. You can always ditch it if you don't like it.

While I don't want to encourage or discourage you to play The Spoils by saying this, please be aware that it is targeted to a 15+ year old audience. There are curse words in the flavor text, pictures with women in questionable roles and an abundance of blood and gore on some cards.

A very valid point King.
It's been discussed at GREAT length on the TS forums with the final word something like this:
TGI realizes what choices they've made regarding the flavor and style of the game. This is where they want to go. An older audience. An audience that is not offended by these things. An audience who gets the jokes.
It's understood that some people will not play and others will not be allowed to play due to their choices. TG is ok with that and only time will tell if they made a wise choice or not.

im just looking at hecatomb...
a great game, but the art was a little gorey and it failed....this game has less 'creepy' art, but WAY more gore/blood and ''other'' things....

In my oppinion, Hecatomb simply tried too many different things at once. Pentagon cards, see through windows, nightmareish art...lots of dark over tone in general.
The spoils also tries a couple new things with it's art and flavor text, but IMHO nothing near Hecatomb.
Plus, in the next 2 weeks, we will start getting hints about "The Spoils Experience" style of tournament play.
I think The Spoils is going to be straight up ground breaking!

ONe thing that plagues me is when the official set is released, will everyone that participated in Open Beta get to use the Open Beta release cards? If so that puts them at a big advantage from those they may just be getting into the game.

Yes, we are allowed to use the open beta cards. And of course it puts us at an advantage. If a new player picks up Yugioh or MtG, they'll be at a dissadvantage too.

I've spoken with people from Tenacious Games about their First Edition set coming out next week. The distribution of the Open Beta cards covered MAYBE 10% of the people they expect to attract.
Those of us who were lucky enough to be invloved in OB only have an advantage in that we've played a few games and have a better knowledge of the available cards.
This is EASILY overcome. thetournamentfaction.com has a complete spoiler with pics of the cards. If you have no other choice, nearly 1/2 of the set is downloadable from thespoils.com in the form of demo decks. With only a little time investment, you'll be ahead of those who don't find out about The Spoils until it's on the shelves at their local Brick-n-Mortar game shop.
Lastly, if it's a matter of just having a small collection of cards already, The Spoils can be pre-ordered on several sites for mid to low $30 per 12 pack booster box. It won't take all that much to trade out for the cards to make a great deck. Check out the trading folder on thespoils.com message boards and you'll see there are 20 or more of us that are really into trading.
The game is just too good to worry about someone else having an advantage...if you're a good strategist, you'll bounce right up there with us!
Trust me!

to me he spoils falls in the same lines as Duelmasters. its very comparable to magic the gathering.
duelmasters was Magic Lite. the spoils is Magic Plus.
i've started playing it. i have a deck. i won't invest too much time on it. the spoils gives me two new things. Great Tournament actions and fresh funny settings. neither of those i really care about.
i'm already playing magic and while the fun has been sucked out of compedative play i dont' play compeditively so my social circle is still excited by magic.
where duelmasters is Magic Lite, and spoils is Magic Plus, MtG itself is Magic Basic. its a pattern thats been familliar for a long time and rather than changing up the pattern theres just new ways to look at it (ie new sets) i see no need to really invest too much in something new when the thing i have hasn't broken yet. especially when card games already hurt my wallet.
i only started playing MtG a little over a year ago and i'm already amazed at how NOBODY wants to make type 1 decks outside of my social circle. to me type 2 is just being intimidated by the old cards. i can understand the broken power nine. but a lot of people don't even try to outdo old decktypes. well aside from the people i actually play with.
my suggestion is that if you're one of those people thats been pissed about magic's compeditive metagames, play spoils. otherwise its doesn't exactly feel 'new' (aside from it being really chain friendly. with enough rescources you could get like ten cards out in a single combo. but then again i have gearsmith and arcanist)
