I am one of those who love the color wheel and think it is the main thing that is better than Yu-Gi-Oh. Flavor is essential, but shouln't go too far, just enough to build a deck around the story maybe, and i stretch maybe. How essential is the color wheel, and do you think is has been thrown out the window, especially since artifacts now rule?

Artifacts will soon be overthrown, so the color wheel should stay.

It's harder to run a Story themed deck in M:tG I think, but not impossible.

If they keep rotating the wheel in other color's favor, we might as well have blue with "destroy target non-[whatever] creature" and green with "return target [permanent] to its owner's hand".

I think the color wheel needed to be changed because when they (on wizards) described the color wheel philosophy, they explained it in such a cool way that it made way too much sense.

I'm sure if you article search color wheel, or such, you can find what I'm talking about. When they were doing the color weeks.

artifacts don't effect the color wheel, other players do.

It's almost perfectly balanced.

the reason they shifted the color wheel was blue had "too many" mechanics. I dont think they did a terribly good job, though.

Giving blue the affinity mechanic on top of it was just plain wrong....

However, now that we have skullclamp, blue doesn't dominate as much, but about 85% of tournament decks still at least splash blue for counterspells.
