View Full Version : Duelist's Text Boxes - Seriously

Has anyone gone out and bought the newest volume of Duelist? The editing over thought balloons to put English text in is lousier than ever. It seems the current strategy that they've kept for quite some time now is to just place a rounded rectangular blob over the thought balloon and write inside that. And it looks crap-tastic. here are some example, courtesy of yamicell2501. And these aren't even particularly bad ones (I just can't scan my own volume properly to show you some of the real stinkers).

For Millennium World the editors outline text with white when it flows out of the thought balloon. This usually looks alright, althought even Millennium World has some moments when you think 'surely they could have edited that better'.
Considering that Duelist is now drawing close to the end and is really getting to the good stuff, I don't want it to be spoiled by sloppy editing. When I heard that Duelist was going to be coming out every other month instead of every month, I thought that this would be a good thing as they could put more effort into it. But it makes no change at all. In fact, it seems worse.
Perhaps to some it seems a small thing to nag about. But it really kinda ruins the whole feel of the manga when on every page you look at multiple random floating ovals obscuring the page.

I never noticed this, but Honda looks far too happy with the Anchor Deathmatch situation...

My computer's a little slow right now, but I'm assuming these pictures are from 16, yeah, Joe Yamazaki and his crappy editors need to resign pronto. I just hope if a 'Kazenban' comes to the US then Viz'll have Anita return to edit Volume 9-31 to a make higher standard (i.e. Makuba not calling Kaiba by his surname).

16 was actually my first Duelist. I noticed that too. What I don't get, is why they even need to make their own ill-fitting text boxes. Can't they just put the words, you know, in the bubbles? Or is there something in the editting I am missing?

4Kids doesn't have anything to do with the manga...

I only have very basic photoshopping skills and I could do this 100 times better.
It's almost like they aren't even trying....
Actually scratch that, it's OBVIOUS they aren't trying.

4Kids has the rights to dub, alter, and otherwise prepare for native audiences, the Yu-Gi-Oh! and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX animes. They have nothing to do with the translation and production of English Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist, Yu-Gi-Oh! Millennium World, or Yu-Gi-Oh! GX mangas. That's Viz Media.
And Viz is as bad as 4Kids in most respects.

Now, I admit, I've been using the Box o' Doom on more of my fair share of projects. But that's because I openly admit my Photoshopping skills are ass (by the way, my team member is doing my editing from now on, so no more Boxes o' Doom.) But, yeah, I've spoken about the Viz Box o' Doom on several occassions (some with Ryuzaki, if I remember.)
Oh yeah, and also...

Lolz Horoko. It's scary that that's hardly even an exaggeration.
Lemme also note that the person who has the job that I assume includes text boxes has constantly changed for Duelist.
I realise that JPN Yu-Gi-Oh does have thought balloons where the text flows out (Why Takahashi? Why?) but we know that they can do better than this. And while Millennium World is aeons ahead of Duelist, sometimes even their text editing is questionable...
*prays that the editing will be good by Alcatraz Duel Tower saga*

Well, most of the time the text isn't on part of the manga artists. There is a whole group of people who do that for them (which is why you sometime see those random placed pieces of dialogue.) In a manga series that ran weekly for almost 10 years, text would sort of be the last thing on the publisher's mind, right?
By the way, what volume is "Duelist" on? I just stopped keeping track.

It's on Duelist 16, Horoko. I assume that's original volume 23.
BTW Horoko, do you know whether Viz translates the blurb on the back of the original Japanese volumes or just writes their own?
I'm pretty unconfident that Viz have any intentions of improving the text boxes for later Duelist volumes, considering they used bad ones even for one of the best and most important duels of the series, the anchor deathmatch.
Maybe one day English-language Yu-Gi-Oh won't suck.

Considering I don't even think they started doing that until near the midway/end point of Duelist Kingdom, they would have to have made up something. (Of course, I think I have odd volumes anyway.) Of course, if you can give me an example, I can compare.

That was a bit after the whole situation. It was different in the manga than it was in the anime (Mai and the others didn't show up until after everything transpired.) They really didn't have clue one about what happened until after they were told.
