me and my friends have recently had a couple drafts. weve done mirrodin and ravnica. were thinking about doing betrayers of kamigawa.

i have a bunch of questions

1. is betrayers a good set for a draft?
2. what other sets do you guys suggest for doing drafts?
3. buying boxes in stores are usually around $100. ive seen some sites online will sell a box for like $60 or less. are there any good reliable sites or places to buy boxes for cheap?
4. how do you guys award the winners? when i did drafts with some other kids years ago we would put all the rares and uncommons on a table and make a line starting with the person who got first place going back to the person who got last. then we just alternated taking 1 card each until theyre all gone. but recently we just kept the cards we took originally and the winner would get 2 packs or something and 2nd place would get maybe 1 pack. something like that.
so what do you guys do after the games are over for prizes?

thank you very much

1) It is okay, but whoever pulls a jitte will probaly win.
2) Any set, Coldsnap is a good one as well.
3) I don't know.
4) What we draft we keep, but each player contribute $3 to the prize pool and packs are awarded accordenly.

1 - I wouldn't draft betrayers. Any compotent person who pulls a jitte should win.
2 - Coldsnap is fun, and Ravnica - Guildpact - Dissenssion is pretty good aswell.
3 -Ebay?
4 - We usually do what you did, draft rares at the end. It stops people from Rare Drafting, and makes for a better draft overall.

1.betrayers is a pretty bad set. there is only one card of value, and it is a near instant win in limited.
2. dont draft coldsnap. you will almost certainly lose money in the transaction, and the set is pretty bad for drafts.
3. Ebay for boxes
4. definatly just draft the rares at the end. It saves money, prevents rare drafting, overall improves the draft. Also, if something valuable is opened, it ensures the winner will get it, as opposed to the winner getting packs, getting crap, and the person who rare drafted and scrubed out gets good value.

I would do a Kamgawa block draft rather than triple Betrayers.
I, however, prefer RAV block draft.
If you purchase a box, and have 8 people, you should have 12 packs for prizes. Either do 8/4, or 6/4/2 for prize.

we usually do 1 pack from each person for the prize pool (8 people, 8 packs for the winner(s))

so essentially everyone buys a draft set and a extra pack for the prize

how do you give out 12 packs for prizes. that would leave 24 packs for 8 people. every person gets 3 packs? thats only 45 cards per person. thats not enough to make a deck.

lol you must have never drafted before, in a draft people make a minimum of 40 card decks meaning you only actually use 22-24 of your cards that you draft, the rest go into your sideboard

Draft gets 40 card min decks.
Each player has access to an infinite amount of basic lands they can maindeck(often takes up 17 slots.)

yes i know what Toshiro Umezete and ShadowZ are saying, but usually we just draft the cards, and then take all the cards and pick the BEST to make the deck. we draft 5 packs each so we have 75 cards and then we pick and choose to make the best deck. we dont use all of our cards.

Are you drafting in the traditonal sense where you pass the packs? 3 packs drafted is enough to make good decks.

That is not draft, that is sealed.

Draft is when you all gater around a table and each person opens a pack, takes a card from it, then passes to his/her left. You do this with 3 packs per person until all cards have been drafted. It is not simply tearing open the packs and playing what is inside.

no, I think they are drafting just with 2 extra packs... That should make your deck have no filler, and be rediculous.

Well if you really do draft 5 packs instead of 3, DO NOT draft coldsnap as the surging and kindles will be ridiculous.

good diverse game play + value of pulled rares = Ravnica Block

Also, it does sound very much like sealed play if opening 5 packs per player.
Draft saves packs and offers a better pot for distribution at the end.

Oh, and I like that rare drafting idea too! Next box we buy is gonna get a tweak in the prize awarding system. They will be forewarned of course.
