How do you catch a pikachu at the start? He didnt mention trading.

Catch Tailow, its a very nice pokemon and can help with its Endeavor attack. Wurmple, Lotad, Seedot, and Ralts are a bit hard to raise in the beginning, so I wouldn't suggest those. Maybe catch Magikarp when you get the old rod. Its hard to raise, but can be very powerful. Get a couple Zigzagoon to pick up items. I find that very fun. Despite what my book says, they will use their ability even if they are not at the top of your party. Whenever I start over, I make sure to catch 3. They pick up Rare candies once in a while.

Really? I never knew that about Zigazoon, got to get three soon. Rare Candies are cool.

Start off with a Mudkip. Pick up a Taillow or a Wingull (surfer/flier!), an Aron, a makuhita, a magikarp, and a zigzagoon

wait a sec...what happens with Zigzagoon? I thought they would only hold Oran Berries. What is this about rare candies?

Just train your starter to a ridiculously high level while finding HM slaves to learn surf, flash, etc. If treeko is given a varied moveset, he can hold his own. Type really doesn't matter in the gyms if you are 20+ levels higher than the leader/have moves that are super effective. Also, the AI isn't that smart.

They may hold an oran berry when caught. They pick it up themselves when you catch them in the wild. Once you remove the oran berry from him or use it, zigzagoon will use his pickup ability if he is in your party. The higher the level of him, the more chance he will get something good like the tm earthquake. I once had one flygon (for flying) and 5 zigzagoons all 50+ it was pretty awesome finding ultra balls (dont have to buy anymore cause of them :D ) escape ropes, rare candys, full restore, tms all sorts of crud.

It all depends on what level the ziggy is at...for what it picks up.

i always like offsetting treco's weakness, esspecially at the beginning with

ralts- ralts is exetremely harsh to train in the beginning, everyone knows that, but as te game progresses she is like abra, turns out to be a big player in your games later

shroomish- in the beginning of your game treco is weak against rock pokemon(do to pound and quickattack being your first few moves) so shroomish adds to your grass power, also, when it evolves (later on) it has some pretty sick moves, mixingup some poison with some fighting type moves, very versitile.

now for water(since treco/grovyle) is weak to fire, and you will eventually need water support, magicarp is good later on, but at that point in the game you have to spend a few hours hitting the grassy places and such to train it up then evolve it and then let it learn a few attacks, i like maril, it already has some decent moves(and you can catch it after slate port) and train it a little easier on its own.aron/geodude are great to fill your anti- electric types

now you can get either a fire type or an electric type, i would say fire since your anti water is pretty fluid(treco and shroomish)i usually start with torchic but with treco i like houndour, it later turns to houndoom and can learn some sweet move. also, get alotta toxic moves(shroomish/houndoom) those can deffinately help you out.

only in emerald, but yeah Treeko, Tailow, Ziggy, Ralts, Slakoth (way hard to actually use tho), Magikarp, ABRA (tis a monster), some others but those are the ones that stick out and can be long terms deals

as for your water, stick with mudkip. Mudkip's best.

Beginning team-

Mudkip
Zigzagoon
Taillow
Ralts
Aron
Makuhita

Later on, maybe around the 5th badge or so, you'll probably have

Swampert
Linoone
Swellow
Lairon
Hariyama
Kirlia/Gardevoir

Eventually, build up to whatever you think is best. I suggest NO legendaries/ubers. I'm using Blaziken/Jolteon/Dragonite/Houndoom/Metagross/Gyarados on NetBattle right now, it works pretty well.

CATCH A MAGIKARP ^^

Well, I would start off the game by trying to plan out exactly what you want to catch and use throughout the game. On my most recent game of Sapphire, I caught a Taillow and 2 Wurmples early on in the game, and started with Torchic. I then traded for a Mudkip, and waited until Jagged Pass to catch my sixth Pokemon, which was a Spoink. I evolved the 2 Wurmples into Dustox and Beautifly, but then got rid of Dustox because he fell behind and had a terrible moveset, and then caught a Pikachu when I reached Lilycove. Good ideas for Pokemon on your team would be Zubat (Crobats are wickedly fast and great support for your team), Machop/Makuhita (Machop can be caught after badge three), Wingull/Taillow (as a flier really, and for speed), Aron (Aggrons are hard to train, but very powerful), Ralts (Psychic, enough said), Whismur (Explouds can be great if you train them right), and Shroomish/Slakoth (fairly rare, but both have their rewards). My personal favourite to find at the start of the game would be a Nincada. Ninjasks are brilliant Pokemon throughout the game, with their speed boost ability, and a Shedinja is a very interesting choice to use and learn where it is best suited. Also, catching a Magikarp early on can pay off with a big Gyarados by the time you come across Wattson.
