I'm a player that was active when magic first came out, but haven't been for many many expansions.

I'm trying to make a casual deck to just play against my friends (and our usual games we play 3 person magic, which further complicates strategy). So, bascially any card is legal, etc. etc.

Basically, I think I'm going for a deck that has decent control, protection and burn capabilities, and I would like to get some card suggestions.

One of my friends is usually monocolor, so I try to get an Ali from Cairo out and then put a ward on him so he can't be killed = instant won game unless that gets disenchanted.

In addition, I usually bring out Enchantments that help defend or make it so my creatures can't be targeted with spells. On that note-is there a card out there that will protect your enchantments? I also rely on Disenchant, since I haven't found a viable red option to destroy enchants.

So, basically, I have plateaus, uthden trolls for defensive regeneration, firemane angels, crawlspace, meekstone, lightning bolts, protection spells/enchants, etc.

Can someone suggest some other good protection cards or different combinations I may have thought of?

Also...I like the idea of trying to make a discard deck (book burning) that's mainly focused on red, I'd also appreciate any good cards that would work for that.

One of the easiest ways to protect your creatures, would be to use whispersilk cloak adn cincerted effort. Whispersilk cloak makes creature unblockable and it can't be targeted by spells or abilities. It's an artifact equipment. Concerted effort is a white enchantment that gives all creatures on the field the ability that all other creatures on the field have.

Well lets see what I can think up...

there's "Skullscorch" basically its a red spell that: deals 4 damage to target player, or that player may choose and discard 2 cards at random.

(its a great spell early in because its a red hymn to tourach, but it's bad in the way that it plays out because they have the choice of discarding 2 cards instead of taking 4 damage. which means 1 or no cards in hand and they still have that option. Trust me that's how the card works.)

or we have "Priviledged Position" a newer card with a new twist on multi colored... it's mana cost can be paid for with either/or the two seperate colors that the card itself is.

it's a white/green card, so basically its cost is (2)(w/g)(w/g)(w/g) hopefully you've seen these before and I don't need to explain it further.

but it makes it so all other permanents you control can't be the target of spells or abilities your opponents control. So two of these = None of your permanents can be targeted by your opponents. and they end up protecting each other.

That's about it for just off the top of my head. until you need further advise for possible decks I'm sure you have good resourses for such.

With a Red/white deck.. I can suggest making a Weenie Goblin deck.. like for the red part have 1 Mana Goblins with Haste and for the white part of the deck, a couple weenie white creatures and healing spells just incase.
