ok Im having trouble catching some pokemon in the safari zone like tauros. The stupid thing always runs away whenever i throw a rock at it regardless of how much food i give it first. is there a good technique to use here?

I just tossed pokeballs like a madman. Some folks toss rocks at the stronger pokemon, and food at the weeker ones. Maybe someone else figured out a scientific way. I liked just tossing pokeballs myself.

If you are using Red/Blue version then go to the area that you found Tauros, then walk around intill the your Safarii visit is over then fly to Cinnabar Island go to the water next to the gym and surf up and down on the "beach" (that wierd bar that you face before surfing) and you should see a Tauros and other Safarii pokemon. This way you can battle it and weaken it instead of throwing pokeballs like a "madman". If you are using Yellow version then just find the pokemon your looking for and throw a rock, if it runs find it and try again, then throw a Pokeball, repeat intill capture. Both of these worked for me.

I use a lot of food, it makes it stay longer.

True, throwing rocks will make the rare guys run, but even if they break out and say that its eating, its better to throw food to make it stay.

Otherwise it stays for like ... 2-3 turns.

Yes food does work but on some pokemon like Chansey or Dratini, the Pokeball might not work. Or at least it doesn't when I came across them and tried food to keep them around.

yeah i tried that too but one time i trew 2-3 times food to it and tried a ball and i caught it(chansey) i was surprised since food makes them harder to cathc

I have yellow version, So that trick wont work. But yeah every so often when i would throw a rock and the tauros would stay I still wasnt able to capture it. Food just plain out sucks I never even hit him with a pokeball after that.

Additional Comment:
My friend is letting me borrow his red version so I figured i could use that cinnabar trick to get one easily... But Ive heard on the interent traded pokemon may grow faster but also end up weaker in the end... is this true?

Yes and no:
Yes they grow faster...no they don't become weaker (at least I didn't noctice it with the Poliwhirl/Jynx in game trade) but it doesn't really matter if you use Carbos, Iron and etc.

this combo works for me when I use it on the stronger or rarer ones food food pokeball pokeball OR food food rock pokeball this works about 70% of the time for me

You weaken them by throwing safari balls then give them food if you have to but KEEP THROWING BALLS even if it looks hopeless! (Take it from me, I caught every pokemon in the safari zone that way.EVEN SCYTHER!)

LOL... me too, but Chansey is too big or something, you MUST throw a rock... WTF then it runs!

IMO Safari Zone is the hardest aspect of PRBY to master.

I have no definate methods, just riding on pure dumb luck. Initially, i have always believe in throwing the safari balls like a mad man too. 'Coz when I throw food, I kept missing the pkm or when I throw a rock, they have this great tendency to run away.

But by chance, i tried food, rock then balls till capture method. Seems to work for me...except for khangaskan! Could anyone share their methods of success with me? And I would try others methods suggested from this forum too.:)

So i have always prefered to capture in the wild where i can control the battle situation rather than basing on luck. The pkm i have no choice are, syther, nidorans (both genders, coz they are high levels), dratini and khangaskan.

you can get both nidorans west of Viridian city...

At least Dratini doesn't run you low on available steps. Just find a pond and fish for eternity.

I've used the Cinnabar trick to get all Safari pokemon except Kangaskhan...who just won't show no matter now long I stay on the beach.

Additional Comment:

Speaking of Kangaskhan, is there a particular area where she always appears in the Safari Zone?

I don't use glitches anymore (cept to get Farfetch'd/Lickitung/Mr.Mime/Jynx/Mew) but I specifically recall from memory that 'Khan can indeed be found with the Cinnibar trick. Certain pkmn appear only in certain parts of the Safari Zone. What you can do is just Safari till you actually see the pkmn you want (so you know you're in the right place) then fly to the island.

If one's goal is to formulate a scientific method of catching safari pkmn, the first thing to consider is that it's a set of probability equations. I read some faq on it by some gamehacker type person, and I can't remember all of what it said, but I know there's a "catch rate" and "run rate" and it's one of those X/256 type things. And I'm pretty sure...ahh screw it; if anyone knows a link to an faq like the one I mentioned, please do post it.

BTW if you want a Kangaskhan you could always just use RC on Missingno.. Or see the Mew Glitch thread.

That is true. The rate at which your pokemon's stats go up will decrease, but the "time" it takes for that rate to become zero is greater than that of a non-traded pokemon. After you hit max evs, which is around 20 runs through the elite 4, it will not matter.

Balance it out. Food to soothe it, and then a rock to anger it. There are a lot of them that will just run away at random, so luck is pretty much the only thing that gives you much opportunity.

Edit: and now I realize that this thread is almost a year old...

Yep, Kangaskhans are found in the area just east of the starting area.

Safari Zone in RBY is crazy. I caught a Scyther on my third encounter by just throwing safari balls (the 7th ball got him) but I've seen Pinsirs 30+ times and still haven't caught 1!!! I did get a Chansey today, which I'm stoked about, I got him by throwing 1 rock, then 1 safari ball, first go ;DDD Yep, forget about trying to catch Chansey without throwing a rock first, the ball always misses him.. >.<

I haaaaaaaaaate Pinsir!!!!

Use the Cinnabar Island Edge Cheat.
