pokemon colleseum help needed

i am at the part where you get metagross. i have gotten all the pokemon up to tyranitar and a bit more. but when i do the tower thingy i couldnt get metagross. now when i go to the tower i fight the boss right away and not the dude who has the metagross. have i lost my chance?
