I just got emerald, and I just started the game. I was hoping to start witha FEMALE mudkip, so I can breed it for my ruby, but I tried multiple times, and it is always a guy. Is it possible for mudkip to be a female???

Note: I saved just before picking the starter and I made my character a guy, and whenever I try, the mudkip is a male. Do I have to make my character a female to get a femal mudkip???

There is a 12.75% chance youll get a female starter. It doesnt matter wether your a Boy/Girl

does it decide as soon as u make ur character, or when u choose it out of the pack.

It chooses it when you pick it out the pack I believe.

Yes, not all pokemon are a 50/50 chance. Some have much higher female rates (like Skitty) and high male rates (such as Eevee)

And yes it choses from the pack not when you start.

As soon as you start a new save file, there are certain values that are preset. Some of these values include IVs, natures, and more of certain Pokémon (Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, and the Regis, for example); there are many more of these "preset values." The nature, gender, and IVs of the starter Pokémon are also preset once you begin a new save file.

To answer your question more directly, it "decide[s] as soon as u make ur character," so you will have to restart your game again and again to get the gender Pokémon you want.

Dark Magic Attack is right about the gender rate percentage of the starters. It is 12+%. It also does not affect the gender of your starter if you are a boy or a girl.

Are you sure? I was trying to get a Torchic of a certain nature once, and a few times it came up female when before it had all been male.

You mean you didn't restart? From experience and several other sources on the web (which were obviously wrong), I was under the impression that the Legendaries, including Lati@s, and the starters, all have preset values...

**Slowbro takes note for future reference**

EDIT: Come to think of it, knowing that these values are not preset would have saved me a lot of time! :(

nope, I saved right next to the pack, and whenever I got a male, I turned it off, and tried again

u might what said e-mails or whatever to the sites to change it...maybe I'll even get interviewed!!!! cool!!!!!!!!!! LOL, j/k j/k

jokes aside, it is kinda weird how websites say the wrong thing.

Additional Comment:
u know, the gender of the poke I had to fight changed in some of the times I had to restart, as well

Oh, when I say "other sources on the web" I was actually referring to some threads (which would probably be impossible to locate by now...).

About the Pokémon you faced, I'm not surprised that that one changed. What is interesting is that you could eventually keep restarting from that spot and get a shiny starter! This makes it much easier to get a shiny starter than by breeding...

it doesnt matter just have everstone and breed with ditto and then hope its a girl

You don't seem to understand. That would take even LONG to produce a girl then saving and qutting until you got one.

I was not far enough in my fire red to trade over yet(at like 4th gym, haven't played for months), plus I have no link cable. I'm trying t fill the dex in ruby, and I needed mudkip/and all of the froms, which is why it had to be female

and slowbro, I might have misunderstood, but did u say u could breed, and hatch shinies!!! If so, that would be awsome!!!

Of course you can breed and hatch shinnies. The chances of getting a shiny from an egg are the same as getting one from running into wild ones, however. I'm not sure I understand what you mean, though.

I meant...well, I guess a few things...

1) If u breed two regular pokemon, can u hatch a shiny?

2) If u breed two shiny pokemon, or one shiny and one not, will u automatically hatch a shiny, or can it be regular??

I wanted a female Mudkip, so I saved in front of the bag. On the 3rd try, I got one. So apparently it isn't preset.

using a shiny to breed will not effect if the baby is a shiny. Shiny isn't something that can be inheritied. so two normal pokemon could produe a shiny
