Ok, basically, I know how EV's are "supposed" to work, and I attempted to EV train my pokemon, but it isn't seeming to work...

My friend EV trains , and get's like +7 and up in a certain stat... but whenever I try to EV train in a stat, say Sp. Def, and I go off killing tentacool's, I will only ever gain +1 or +2...

I also have Pokerus AND a Macho Brace, and tried to EV train levels 5, 20, 50, 70 and 90 (and all in between just to make sure if I was training right..).. but yet, I STILL only got +1 and +2's..

Does anyone know why this is?

Oh, and i've also tried with and without the vitamins...and the EV's I tried were Sp. Def (tentacool/tentacruel) and Sp. Atk (Spinda)...

All help is appreciated!

It sounds like you're doing everything right. I do want to go over a few things, though. These seem pretty obvious, so please don't be offended, because if you don't know these things then your EV training will suffer.

1st - For effective EV training, the Pokemon must be "clean". By that, I mean it can't have been involved with any battles since you caught or bred it.

2nd - Be sure to use your Vitamins also before you do any battling with it. Vitamins can only be used for the 1st 100 EVs for each category. Once the Pokemon has 100 or more EVs in a cat, it won't take the Vitamin, even though it can still be further EV trained in that area.

3rd - Have the right nature. If the Pokemon has a nature that increases one of the stats you're training to raise, that stat will go up faster. If the nature reduces that stat, it won't go up as fast as it would otherwise.

You probably know all this, I just wanted to put it out here just in case.

Now, if you're doing all this, and you're battling the correct Pokemon with both Pokerus and Macho Brace, you will EV train properly. Don't be concerned if you only see small increases with each level up. Some of that is going to depend on how many EVs you gained between level ups, and the current level of the Pokemon. Have faith! If you are training correctly, the EVs will be there, and your Pokemon will be well trained in the end.

ok, I did that already, and it didn't work...

however, after reading what you said, I decided to give it a go once again, and it's working somewhat... the pokemon i've been "ev" training was gaining +4 and +5 to the stat I wanted... but even still, as grateful to that as I am, my friends get +7-+13 sometimes...

Should I just keep tryin to reach +7 to +13 or just start training that pokemon I was training regularly?

EVs don't actually increase your stat boost; they're just factored in when you re-calculate stats when leveling up. I just got a +27 attack boost on a Shiftry between levels 97 and 98 after EV training it from that point, but for the same experience, you'd only expect two or three points at level 30 or so. At lower levels, there's less stat inflation, so the pogey you EV trained from level 20 to 30 won't see dramatic stat increase until later levels, you'll be getting around +4 or +5 consistently at later levels, even after you've reached your EV cap.

If you really want to test out EV training, catch a "clean" and "new" high-level Lairon in Victory Road, EV-it-up all the way (in Atack, for example) and then level it up once. You should see a massive increase in that stat. Otherwise, Pokemon do not increase by 6 and 7 each time they grow, generally. The only way you'd get that to happen is if the Pokemon is at a high level, and gets massive amounts of EV points. The game makes up for the past levels (Lairon's previous 40-something levels, for example) by dumping them out all at once.

That is probably why, because I usually just attempt to EV train up until level 40-50... hmm, I suppose I should attempt to EV train some more around level 80...

The total amount of effort you earn is not always applied instantly. The higher the level of your pokemon, the more of an increase you'll see---until you reach the max for that stat. The lower the level of your pokemon, the less increase you'll see applied on each level up, but you are stilll earning effort and it Will be applied in future level ups. Eventually, the effort you've earned will all be applied to the stats affected.

Got Effort?

Thank you very much to those who all helped me figure this all out :D
