I've never quite understood the fuss made about hand advantage. I thought the oblective was to get your opponents lp to zero. I must have missed the part in the rulebook that reads:"if you have more cards in your hand than your opponent, you win the duel".Can somebody please help me understand?thanx in advance.

Oh, hand advantage is an elusive concept. The idea is that you and your opponent essentially draw the same amount of cards. Your opponnet starts with 6 and you start with 6. Imagine that the game started and you go first. You have a spell card that says "Remove five cards from your opponent's hand from the game."
When you activate that card, your opponent will have 0 cards in his or her hand and you will have 5. So your opponent can't defend him or herself from your onslaught. You summon a monster, your opponent will have to be lucky to draw an answer that destroys monsters on his or her turn. If your opponent draws a dust tornado, then you have a free attack on your opponent's lifepoints. Even if your opponent draws a smashing ground or dark hole, you'll still have a free attack to your opponents lifepoints when you summon another monster in the next turn. As long as you have more resources, you can trample your resources over your opponent's to get to his lifepoints.
So let's say you have a Beserk Gorilla on the field and a heavy storm in your hand. Your opponent has 2 magic and trap cards on the field and no cards in the hand. You have 2 cards combined on the field and hand and your oppone thas 2 cards on the field. So far it's even. When you use Heavy Storm, you may blow away two sakuretsu armors. All of a sudden, your opponent has 0 cards in both hand and field and you have one lone Beserk Gorilla waiting to attack for free.
If you're still a bit confused about the concept of hand advantage, try this with your friends. You start out with 0 cards in your hand and 20,000 life points. Your friend starts out normally. Try to see if you can win the game without dipping down to 12,000 lifepoints. You'll might be shocked to find that you can't win the game at all. Even if you want to use Cyber stein, you'd have to end up less than 12,000 lifepoints. It would be a fun experiment.

To me, Hand Advantage doesn't even matter. Its just the field to me. Field advantage is just it. If your opponent has a bigger hand than you, but you have the field to protect against that, it doesn't even matter, the field does. I still win even if I topdeck, people draw too many crappy cards to really protect against that, or even support.

if i have 5 cards in my hand, 2 on the field, and 1000 LP, and my opponent has 3 cards on the field, and 8000 LP, i am winning the game by far. This is because i have more options and the ability to use 1 for 1's to control everything that he/she does.

Obviously there are exceptions here...think burn and the rarely seen suicide beatdown...

Hand advantage is only good if you have a good hand......
A hand with no advantage has no hand advantage. Do you see?
lol.
In any case, if you build your deck right, hand advatage does matter. If it doesn't, then you aren't building your deck right.
Like for me, i'm built mine bad on purpose because i'm determined to make a deck that gets advatange from having no cards in your hand (Otherwise known as 'no hand advantage'). I'm positive it can be done, i just don't have the skills to make one that works well enough to be competitive.

If you have no cards in hand to play, you'll more often than not have a harder time winning.

True. Which is why it's so difficult to build. But i like the challenge.
