Why.
You people are spending plane tickets and hotel fees to play in a tournament for like 2 days. When some people work their @$$ off working 14 hours a day to try to get their families over to where they are. For profit? You get profit if you make Top 8. Unlikely, and only the top 3 prizes are worht it. For fun? Go outside and throw a football. Why do you guys think it's worth it to spend SO MUCH $$ for a card game?
I lied. there are two questions.
How?
I'm curious. How do you guys afford this? Even with a job I don't see how some people can go to like every SJC ever. And get a frickload of cards.
PS: This isn't a rant or flame or anything. I just want to know.

Sponsors/Family Benefits + Work
If you can go for next to nothing why not?

Work you ba stard! I work 50+ hours a week with a full college schedule, it's nice to take off a weekend every now and then to play a card game. I'm 19, I don't have a family to take care of. And if you're sponsered (rarely), you can earn plane tickets/hotels and give your earnings to whomever is sponsering you.
I hope that sums it up.

Perks.
Now, what does it matter to you that people travel all over? It's fun to meet new people and see new places. As to how people get there, they hustle. Hustling is what gets stuff done. Plus most people can break even at an event anyways...hustling = money from all over the place in one form or another.

if u to well in one big tourny, u can sell the prizes to pay for the next one. a psp or ipod will just about cover a plane ticket. also sponsors help a lot too.

i dont really get why someone would fly across the country for ygo...
this game is not fun
Then don't waste our time posting on a message board dedicated to it.
I think if you have a job and don't have a family to support or anything, you could probably afford to go to one of these things.

its pretty stupid to fly a plane across the country to TRY to win a silly ygo card that will barely sell and waste your whole weekend doing it...in a game that really really is not fun at all...

That why you make your time worth it over there. Play some ppl for stuff, I think if I would go across the country. I matter as well, make some side profit.

I get money enough for everything but flights. But I do get flight benefits from my mother so I don't have to pay for shiz.

Wes, the players that fly across the country either win prizes and sell them, have sponsorship, or are just rich. =/ Most dont fly either, usually 90% of those who attend an sjc drive.
Besides, it is fun. Why do you play? Why does everyone play? If you dont find it fun, thats only your opinion, Wes. =/
Btw, Dale's barely selling, silly, little card sold for $2777. Most PSPs can be sold for $300, and iPods the same. Even DSs can be sold for $100. So liek =/

I mostly just have the time and don't need money. I love the experience though, it is one of the best things in yugioh.

All of us yugimonz players are sad pandas and have no lives. We are nerds, well not all of us. Anyways, if flying all over the country gets us off the internet and gets us out in the e-world, then why not?

I think I can relate this to a bit Demetri Martin did on his Comedy Central special: "I want to make a 2,500 piece jigsaw puzzle. Then when you put the whole thing together it says 'Go Outside!'"
Basically I would probably never plane ride my ass from sjc to sjc. That sort of behavior should only be done by sponsored teams.
When they come locally, though, yeah I'll come. The chances are you're out $15 bucks but its your hobby. Its something you love to do and try to excel at. In a way it betters yourself (if only in an insignificant way at first) to something greater.

Here's how I look at it for if you go to a SJC.
Plane Ticket for yourself. 125-250$.
SJC Win, sell your winnings, besides Labtop, earn 1,000-3,300$, You made a profit, what did you learn?

Thar profit=good
But seriously there is no way to guarentee a top 8 unless you cheat.

i work. and when we do stay in hotels and stuff we split it. think about it. a room is 60 a night. 3 ppl.....20 bucks.
also some of us (not me) play in tournaments that have a 60$ prize everytime. you win a couple of them a month and your set. (thare is a place i know of that has a 70$ prize everytime! its way to far for me to go to on a saterday)

i dont play competitively but i judge major tournaments when they want me to. I was just asked to judge PC Atlanta. While its true i won't make money, I also won't be paying anything to work it, AND i get to travel, stay in a hotel and get to meet new people and embarass myself in front of all the pro circuit players like i did at the toronto 10K!!!!! but it is fun, and as a hobby people set aside money out of their budgets to pay for it, that combined with tournaments where you earn money it doesn't cost as much to actually play. The pro players (which would be playing on a pro circuit if yugioh had one... hmm interesting concept...) probably make a profit on the game, much like some of the VS pro circuit players. Not to mention look at the people who make money writing about yugioh (metagame).
yugioh is currently the top ranked TCG in the world.... magic is second and VS is third... and for everyone who plays the game... it is fun! for everyone who judges the game, it is fun! judges tend to have more fun then the players.... we get to deck check dale at every tourney he goes to (not intentionally... it just happens randomly... i know.. strange...) and we get the satisfaction of helping players play the game... (not to mention the free product for judging.... i dont spend any money on yugioh except to get into weekly tournaments.. which is between 2 and 5 a tourney)
