This set looks like it will make equip cards more popular then ever, especially with that new Cat Warrior who makes them instant-able effects.

Darksteel is a pretty solid set in and of itself, offering a good balance to each color, although I still wonder why they have to give black 4 costing 3/3's that cant block and red 1/1's that have to attack every turn. This set is going to be great for the block and even t2 community, but will contribute much less to extended. I've been noticing that trend, unfortunately, that the last two blocks have been so heavily theme oriented that only a few cards escape into the extended, and almost none to classic, formats. Odyssey block gave a good shakeup to extended, introducing 'tog and wishes, among other things. But Onslaught and Mirrodin cannot say the same. An example: Oxidize is the type of card that will see tons of block play. Will it ever escape into extended? not a snowballs chance in hell, unless masticore is a HUGE problem in your area. I know I'm playing devil's advocate, but hear me out. Urza and Masques cards werent as specific as they are now, thus is why they are more prominent in extended, as an example. I can pinpoint a few cards that will see play outside of block, Pulse of the Forge may weasel its way into a few sligh/burn builds, and trinishpere is EXCELLENT academy tech in t1, almost more effective than gorilla shaman imo.

It's a great set with alot of solid cards for the block, but it doesn't offer as much to the magic community as a whole like, say, torment did.

I think Darksteel is a pretty good set. It's no Beta, of course, but ehh :D . I mostly play Type 2 anyways, so this set will definetely make an impact. I would have to say my favorite card will probably be Leonin Shikari. This card can do so many things and so many combat tricks, it's insane. "Uh, I'll Bolt your guy," "OK, in response, I'll equip Lightning Greaves." Your creatures can never die. Well, by spot removal, of course lol. Also, Darksteel screams "KILL AFFINITY!!" so loudly that it's insane. By looking at the spoiler, I predict mono-green beats will make a comeback in Type 2, besides elves. We got the Troll, and we have the new Viridian Zealot, plus many others. Ehh, I dont really know, though, those are just my opinions. In like two weeks, I'm going to a "release" tournament of Darksteel. It's at my local gaming store, and it's like a prerelease, even though it happens way after the real one. There I'll see how the cards play out and hopefully it will be interesting to see how the new cards will work.

The last thing White needs is a terror...

From what i've read online, I'm not going to like Darksteel too much.
There's a few chubby artifacts for the kids, and a couple of decent counters...but it really seems biased for white in my eyes.
A terror...a mass tap...yet another mass removal...a possibly huge prevent and gain spell (hallow)...possible mass-enchantment removal...should i go on?

The only thing decent-looking for black is death cloud.

If I heard correctly, Did white finally get spot removal in Purge??? That would rock....sure it only kills black or artifact creatures, but hey...its mirrodin block, almost everyone will have that.

Yeah....Eater of days is gonna rock, I agree Darksteel Collosus in a little bit too timmy-ish for me

As you mentioned, there are several strong white spells in Darksteel. I wouldn't say the set is biased towards white though. If anything I would argue green comes out strongest. Oxidize, Pulse of the Tangle, Fangren Firstborn, Viridian Acolyte and Rebuking Ceremony could all see serious tournament use.

Black has three decent cards; Death Cloud, Greater Harvester and Echoing Decay.

Red has an extended-usable card in Pulse of the Forge...

I'll be glad when black gets playable again.
Where's Gloom? Where's Dark Rit? Where's Black Knight? Contamination even?

We can't give black a decent anti-white card, but lets give white Karma and their own terror. Where is the logic?

Purge isn't in white's character...it's like printing a red counterspell.
I am happy to see green get a boost, green has been practically absent in tournament play for a while now.

are you crazy???Its been turn 2 or three kills for black (reanimator) and red (sligh) for so long now....white is just now starting to get good. and well deserved too.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that Red now has the equivalent to Blues MIDIRECTION (in the form of SHUNT)

Yea, that leaves me with a little uneasiness too...
White has removal...
Red has a target changer...
What's next?
Is black getting a prevention spell?
Is blue getting a massive burner spell?

The tides are surely changing...

Since we're on the topic of Purge, I must say that I am in love with the flavor text.

I don't forsee people playing Purge all that much. Its too limited in scope. In sideboards perhaps, but right now black isn't much of a threat.

I was really suprised with Shunt though. Its so out of flavor.

The banning of Tinker/Ancient Tomb in extended hurt the value of Darksteel Colossus.

For fun I built a pre-banning Tinker deck with Darksteel Colossus on Apprentice.

The GOD draw:

1st Turn: Chrome Mox (Imprinted Blue), Ancient Tomb. Cast Tinker. Sac the Mox. Darksteel Colossus.

That's an 11/11 Indestructible Trampler on the first turn. Insane!

Is he a Timmy card? Of course. But he does have his merits.

Well i'm happy to finally see a not-so-expensive City of Brass with Mirrodin Core and i also wanan try out the new Trinisphere + Chalice of the Void combo =D

Urza
01-27-2004, 09:06 PM
How does that combo work?

Chalice of the Void checks for the converted mana cost of spells. The Trinisphere just increases cost to play, not the converted cost.

I want to try out that Panoptic Mirror.

Well I haven't seen all of the series but I know a few cards like the ones Pojo reviewed, Purge, Darksteel Collosus. I personally think Machinate is a good card but I run a affinity deck, also I'm planning to make a deck around Collosus but I have a question are there any good cards that would help out an affinity deck in Darksteel?

are there any good cards that would help out an affinity deck in Darksteel?

You bet. This is the artifact block you know. Personally, I think Pulse of the Grid will be extremely nice in affinity, since affinity empties its hand by turn 4-5. Recurrable card drawing for such a cheap cost is quite nice. Machinate is also a helper, since it'll snag that Broodstar in an instant (pun intended.. :D).

On the issue of Panoptic Mirror, I think WoTC made a big mistake. Isochron Scepter was broken enough. Now we can imprint SORCERIES too?? AND PLAY THEM FOR FREE? Good Lord. Here is a list of cards that would seriously do some damage on a PM:

Wrath of God (Or any mass creature removal. No creatures for you. Sorry)
Plow Under (You win. Mana denial+card denial=gg)
Concentrate (or any powerful card-drawer)
Patriarch's Bidding (this is absolutely SICK!!)
Any Sorcery/Instant that can make creature tokens (such as One Dozen Eyes)
The Decrees (sick.)

And last but not least...

Time Walk (Sorry. You can't have anymore turns. :()

Looking at this card make me want to barf. Seriously, as if Iso wasn't bad enough!

I also might try out that Darksteel Forge(all artifacts you control are indestructible), except with the cost of (9), it drives me away... Still, being able to Traumatize somebody each turn is pretty nice. I don't want to have my articraps destroyed so easily, so mind as well use the Forge.
