I used to consider the shonen jump Yu-Gi-Oh official (I don't consider the dub official at all) but now I can't. It was fine. They could have just upped the rating of that one issue and if a parent complains they would have no valid complaint. They could have stuck it on the front '16+' or something. Anything.

Back in the beginning when YGO first aired in the SJ magazine it was completely uneditted, all of tyhe blood, violence, curses, and sexual inuendo were left in. But now they are slowely pulling a 4 kids on us. First language was bleeped out, now panels are getting changed, meh I'm afraid to see what happens next.

I'm guessing they either recieved a great amount of soccer mom complaints on the subject, or now that they are popular with younger audiences deemed it to inappropriate for them to see.

With the dub getting suckier every season and the manga possibly following in que, it's quite sad to know us YGO purists aren't getting any love.... :(

Well, if you think about, they've been underhandenly censoring it for some time. All the cards have their edited names (why don't they just put the original name and have that translation in the back saying the TCG names?). The god cards are just wrong. They got Obelisk's written name right, they got Ra's spoken name right, but Osiris is still Slifer.

It's not just YGO, either. In DBZ, the TV anouncer for the Cell Games had his middle finger edited and Mr. Satan is called Hurcule and anything else that has his real name in it (Funi released an unedited version, why is Viz editing it the manga?).

This falls into my (as yet unproven) theory on the hold up of uncut Yu-Gi-Oh. Once Battle City would have come around, they obviously cannot call it "Slifer the Sky Dragon" because the card is written, in English, Saint Dragon - The God of Osiris; F-I-N-A-L would have to be D-E-A-T-H, and so forth. To call it uncut (with blood, violence, inapropriate gestures, ect) one has to compleatly remove all the changed names witten in English (is it any coincidence that they stopped making the DVDs after the last of them had an episode where the name "Black Magicican" is clearly identifing the so called "Dark Magician?").

I'm thinking there might be a legal issue there. UDE prints the cards, and they might not want Viz to show the same "product" with different names. You'll notice Viz sorta' sidestepped that by introducing the cards with their UDE names, then referring to them by their original names for the rest of the duel...

Well, the whole name thing is quite simply because, well, they're not going to change Dark Magician who has been known as Dark Magician since pretty much the beginning to Black Magician, even though he should be.

As for the whole editting, well, Yugioh as assumed the reputation of being four kids. At first it was suitable for middle schoolers, and, well, they're trying to keep it in that range, and they don't want it promoting anything suggestive.

I didn't realize Shonen Jump began editing. That sucks. I stopped following the early Yu-Gi-Oh English manga after they skipped ahead to the memory world. I figured I'd wait a bit to get the individual mangas, but now I'm not sure I'd ever want to start collecting those issues if their content has gotten the 'dumbing down,' which runs rampant. I'll definitely send an e-mail to Shonen Jump asking for an explanation for the edits. I'll get back to you guys when/if I get a reply.

The first year was edited. Like when Yugi cussed out Ushio, the 1st chapter. instead of Damn, he said shi*. And the diagole is edited, like blockhead instead of idiot. I can read Japanese, but, the origional is very expensive. Anyway, it only contains fantansy violence. Call them or write them, remember kids use it a lot. And Keith, whew....that guy just used every swear and curse in the book oin the Japanese version.

Well, let's just say that Vis and SJ are very inconsistent on their releasing of the Yugioh manga.

For example, they sometimes call Jonouchi Joey and like mentioned, Black Magician Dark Magician.

This is my theory. I think that instead of having one team do the entire translating of the manga, they have a team for each novel. That way each team doesn't translate it the same. And that one team screwed up cause maybe they felt the finger was wrong. And had another team did it, perhaps, nothing would have been editted.

For all we know, Viz and SJ could have no idea the manga is being editted and altered. It could be an inside job. It's clear that SJ and Viz don't do great proof reads on spelling and name corrections and consistency checks.

Death T was pretty accurate. And I think guns are a little more dangerous than middle fingers don't you thinK? Obviously you all do as well.

But sitting here and complaining it on this thread won't do anything. You want the truth? Go to the source. I will be e-mailing Viz on this as well. You all do your job too, and e-mail them. As the fans, we deserve the right to know. If they're false advertising about things, they can't get away with it.

My statement must have come out wrong. My appologies. What I meant to say is they should do what they are doing in showing translations, but they should use the original names in the actual manga itself. For example, if Seto is using Minotarus, the card should read "Minotarus" not "Battle Ox."

I looked into Viz's website and found "contact forms" one can send to them electronicly (supossedly). Unless someone can find a viable e-mail, its a start.

My original thought was that SJ would release an 2nd edition where the Manga would stay as close as popular to the original, but heck...this first edition is starting to look bad.

Vol 5, first chapter, Yuugi is turning into his "other self" in front of his friends for the first time. Jou says, "Yuugi daijoubu ka!" (Are you OK?!) Nothing about insulin, natch! But it had a lot of folks wondering if Yuugi was really supposed to be diabetic or not.

It changes the expression of the character in question. It shows that Jonouchi strongly dislikes Keith enough to give him the finger.

Plus there are the other translation errors and all the other stuff I explained before.

Basically they are dubbing the manga just like they did with all of their other titles.

It doesn't really matter if it doesn't change the story (sometimes, it has.) What matters is that Viz labels the manga as a T rated book, yet with all of the cuts and snips they are changing it into a G rated book instead.

I've read scanlations of the original I"s from a German site (the scans are in english....wierd), and it is not a hentai manga. It shows some...stuff occasionally, but it's actually a romantic comedy only with less comedy. The main character is a blockhead who I've kind of grown to hate because he is so clueless about women. But anyway, it's not hentai. I would not rate it T, but T+ would be fine. Later in the manga (once they become legal age) some more stuff is shown, but it's nothing to worry about. I hope Viz doesn't go edit-crazy, because the story might not make sence if they do.

But the book is rated T, thats for TEENS. There is no reason to censor ANYTHING if it has that rating plastered on it.

Also, the reason she got pissed about GTA was because it's so "easily" acceptable that any kid could do it. I mean, god forbid parents do parenting...I mean...jeez...that's a foregin concept. Besides the sex game sucked, it's something you laugh about with your friends, not set in front of the TV and *ahem* to.

Personally, I prefer to not have to deal with that sort of unacceptable behavior in people, in fiction or reality. Even if there is a rating doesn't mean that you should be allowed to be so socially rude. I understand that it is changing what the original artist wanted, but then there are notable cultural differences between Japan and the US, and any place one might compare.

I know this is aimed at teenagers, but that doesn't mean that younger people will read. But even if they didn't read, the teenagers that would read would probably adopt the habits they read about, and being as young children are more likely to respect and pay attention to teenagers compared to adults, they would adopt the habits of the teenagers just as quickly as the teenagers adopt very bad habits from the things they read and see.

Some parents do parenting; I know my aunt and uncle won't let my 7 yr old cousins watch Yu-Gi-Oh, although they are very interested in the cards. But I still feel that something that can attract the attention of such young children should at least have a form that they can see and not be corrupted.

A side note that I have wondered is that if you are able to compare the US version to the original version, then why are you worrying about the US version?

Because unlike some people, there are actually people who want to see all of this instead of people playing moral police, going around judging the context of the books, especially when they rate the book T for teenagers.

Ppl are just worried about censorship of any kind. I think that with good parenting and guidence, they wouldn't need to censor things like this, but sadly, there are lots of parents that let the media raise their kids for them, and when their kids say or do something that was badly influenced by the media, then all blame is put on the media. That's why there are so many edits today, and it's probably for the best if this goes on.

But my opinion... I blame it all on bad parenting. I mean, why do you think this(the uncut stuff) is acceptable in a country where parents are more strict to their kids(Japan)?

Very true. Blaming the companies seems to be the american way now. Suing a fast food place because they got burnt by coffee that didn't have a warning sign on it... ppl have no common sense any more, or they just find excuses to blame other ppl. No one tries to get along any more.

And no, I'm not rambling off the subject. This is the whole issue here. Because ppl are getting too spoiled and everyone lets them get their way because of no "common sense" law, we have to reward their laziness and greed even more.

The finger just shows what Viz will let get away in one manga, but in another manga rated the same like DB or DBZ, they will allow it.

I even believe (in their early Dragon Ball releases) they allowed the scene were Kuririn pulled down Bulma's top and showed her "you-know-whats." Yet it was rated the same as any Shonen Jump manga...I mean...WTF!?

DB Volumes 17+ are rated A for anyone, but 1-16 is rated T because younger kids are less likely to read the early stuff. And you know? In current Volumes it is almost impossible to understand what most chracters are saying due to all the blurring out of cussing. The way I see it is, they need to rate the series based off of the original content. If that means slapping a T+ or M on the thing, then go ahead and do it.

Excelent point. They're keeping with the physical form, but that is superficial if they are changing the content of the manga. On a cultural note, the US seems anomolous in that it is Easterising. I'd have to say the WWII vets probably thought they'd never live to see the day America had more in common with Japan than Western Europe.

Am I the only one sickened by this? Shonen Jump and VIZ said it would be uneditted and now they are starting to edit it again.....do they ever think of us? the true fans?
