View Full Version : My Birthday!

Arky

Well, today is my birthday. The big 2-0. Still a year until I can LEGALLY drink, (note the emphasis) but it's weird to think that I'm not a teenager anymore.

It's nice because I'm taking a couple of days off of work to go visit home (I live and work about an hour and a half from where my parents live) and hang out with my family. I normally work so often that I don't get many chances to visit.

I guess I need to have some type of discussion to make this a valid topic, so here goes:

Not only am I an adult, but now I'm no longer a teenager. However, I still don't feel like an adult. I still feel like the same old kid I always was.

So, for those of you 18+, when (if at all) did you start actually feeling like an adult?

When I turned 18 i was like crap now i'll go to the clank if things go bad not trying to crap on your umbrella but i dont think they allow b day topics and such but happy aniversery of the day you were born hands you a cookie with sprikles on top. and hands you a party favor, noise maker a,and a package of huggies. You willl need these for when you turn 21 and go to the bar on a night where your not allowed to break the seal.

I'm 20 now. I dont feel like a kid anymore at all. I have a job doing genetic research, I work in a Hospital Trauma center and ER, and take premed classes at college. I have a lot of responsibilities and all, but I still dont feel quite like a full fledged adult. If I had to right now, I could not go out and support myself in the real world.

Trust me, I know the rules better than most. I used to be a mod. That's why I made sure to open the topic up for discussion.

Wait a minute, you used to be a mod? So you're not in a position of power anymore? Psh, forget this thread.

Kidding, kidding. Or am I?

I'm 17 at the end of the month, and I still occasionally feel like an adult. Or at least when I compare myself to others in my age bracket.

Last fall I retired. I'm too busy with work and school to spend more than a few minutes a day here. Plus, I'm not into pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, DBZ, Heroclix or pretty much anything here. This is pretty much the only forum I go into, and Will rules it with an iron fist.

Sigh....

Anyway - when did I feel like an adult...Probably when I hit 25 actually. Your early 20's are a strange age, when you get very little respect from your elders because you're not that old, and you no longer feel like you connect to those younger than you.

During my early 20's I hung out with my peers for a change, people my own age, doing, well, the standard early 20's thing - sex, drugs and rock and roll. I worked full time, sometimes took classes, and had a blast. A BLAST. But then again, I was in my early 20's over a decade ago, and times were DRASTICALLY different. The economy was STRONG, and I had a full time gig, making more money than I really deserved. So I had the leisure time, and the leisure dough.

But once I turned 25 things changed dramatically. I got laid off, was given a huge severance package, and was able to step back and think about things for about 6 months. I realized that I needed my education, and that I couldn't really mess around anymore. I spent the next five years trying to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with my life, and I was STILL clueless.

But I knew I wasn't a kid anymore, and that sooner than later I'd have to face the music and buckle down. Jobs suddenly were harder to get, because well, there's ALWAYS someone younger, more educated, and willing to work for less than you are.

But I really knew I was an adult when I hit 30. When I got that first proctological exam, (no really), and was told by my MD that I needed to make some drastic changes in my lifestyle in order to reach a ripe old age. So I quit drinking and went on anti-depressants. When you have a prescription you NEED to refill once a month (and you're not a girl on birth control) you know you're an adult.

And bills. When you get more bills than junk mail...

And snot nosed whipper snappers actually have an opinion worth listening to...

And when your hair starts turning gray

This is where I'm at right now. When I go back home for vacation, I am unable to relate to a lot of my peers from High School, and people in High School seem so much younger than me even though it is only a few years. I went to drop my best friend's younger brother at a community fair 2 months ago. At the fair, there were so many kids ages 14-18 who just seemed so young and like they lived in such small worlds. That is the feeling I have right now. The world is getting bigger and bigger for me everyday, and so people in HS seem so far behind me already. But I'm trying to make a name for myself as a young adult.

I grew up in relative seclusion. Sure, there were always people around, but nobody to really talk to, or have fun with. I'm a latchkey kid, born and raised, with no money, no job, and no car, which has become quite the vicious little cycle where I can't get one without the other. That's kinda forced me to mature a little more than I probably should have, at least mentally. I'm effectively 18 going on 80, as far as bitterness and low grade hate and loathing of the world in general is concerned. I've always been by myself, and despite what all of my teachers have said, I work better alone (my grades can prove it). And yet, I still have a thing for ice cream, candy, videogames, saturday morning cartoons, comic books (well, manga anyway), and even card games. I'm like a young Will, who's not so uptight and with no position of power.

Scary thought, I know.

Oh well. I'm pretty sure things will change with a girlfriend, even if we are stuck with yahoo and MSN messenger for the time being. And I'm sure college will give me an opportunity to do things I never had a chance before, like... be with people outside of school, or have my own money to budget, or even share a room with a complete stranger and try to avoid having us hate each other utterly.

I'll be 20 in November. When I turned 18 I didn't feel any change at all. I didn't feel any closer to being an adult. College didn't really make me feel like an adult either. I always had academic discipline through out high school to get me to that point, and it was something I always enjoyed and took serious. Drinking, parties, sex, etc didn't do much either since all that was going in high school anyways (It's just now I have to deal less with inexperienced drinkers, except I still run into those over zealous ones who mix drinks without thinking).

It probably wasn't until the beginning of this year when I finally felt like an adult. Within a month my whole world came crashing down. My parents loss a business, grandfather died, my longterm g/f of 2 years broke up with me. One night after band practice, all my friends were held up at gun point, held captive, and robbed. High school classmates died (reckless driving, suicide). My mentality and motivation hit a low. I was over stressed. Still, I had to take care of my business and not let those things ruin my life too much. It finally hit me that I wasn't a kid anymore - I wasn't invulnerable. You grow up feeling that nothing can hurt you, that your parents will always protect you. And when you use to complain about something, the problems were so trivial - parents not letting you go out, a long paper due, etc. Now I realize that pretty much anything can happen to me these days, and I'll have to handle it.

Oh, and how's this for a reminder about your age. Whenever you meet a girl you HAVE to find out how old she is. In highschool you never had to worry about that. Now you can never be too cautious.

It's weird...I have so many bills that I pay for; car, cell phone, electric, cable/internet, water, rent, etc. and I guess I should feel like an adult, but instead I feel like a kid that's just sc****** by. I guess once I graduate from college (only 2 more years) I'll feel more like an adult.

Anyone here listen to Tom Petty in one of his songs he says"People come people go some grow young some grow cold." so i suppose its all up to the person whos doing the growing.I know of poeple who are older than my self that have less responsabilities , now than when they turned 18.Mabey your a grown up when you stop ordering off the kids menue and the resturaunt. jk I think it m ught be a bit hard for people totell others how it fels to be grown up as none feels exactly the same as another person about everything.

I remember when I was 12 I was like "Oh man I can't wait to be 20 years old because I get to drive, read the news, drink cofee, and not go to school." Well gas prices are up, coffe isn't good for me because the Dr. advised me to stay away from caffinated drinks, and I still got school to go too. >_<

Did anyone else hate the evening news because your parents would kick you off the TV to watch it and why adults would have long boring conversations. Now I'm always watching CNN and reading the newspaper and having those conversations but they certainly aren't boring anymore. Either way I'm always going to be a kid at heart so 10 years from now I'm still gonna be collecting Transformers and playing whatever TCG is popular at the time. :D

I don't think I'll feel truly grown up until I own a house, have my dream SUV(hummer), have a few kids running around, and married. So til that day I'll live my bachelor life to the fullest.

How a person feels about being grown up is diffrent for everyone and thier culture ya know. Some people are concered adulets when they are inniceated into the tribe/clan, or go through some ritual.Others are grown up when thier 21 or youger. Enjoy all that you do and everyday you have yaknow its not like twomarow is guarenteed to come. Also most the things you can do as a adult are highly over rated.

FURIA328- Iknow what you mean i was kinda the same way except i can't stand the news most of its depressing. This jsut in scientests have now discoverd that you cant do anythignin life with out it killin you.Morea @ 11. kinda thing too ya know. But now its my turn to kick my neice's and nepphews off the TV from their cartoons so i can watch mine haha...

akiragale_532-wait till your about 18 or 21 or once your out of school its like when I did i was like woah im out of high school what am i gonna do now? Then mabey you'll feel a bit older.

I can't really say that I feel like an adult or a child. I think I'm in sort of a grey-area right now. And in some ways, I wouldn't care at all if I stayed that way the rest of my life. In other ways, I kind of do want to feel like an adult. but the happyness about feeling like neither has the upper-hand right now.

Well first off, Happy LATE B-day. I myself just turned 20 on 7/2 (yayhoo for July b-days). I really don't feel like an adult. I guess I feel like I need to decide what I am going to do with the rest of my life, what college to transfer to, ect ect. One thing is different. I help out with junior high at my church and sometimes I just feel old around them (around 11-13 yrs old). I don't remember being that hyper at that age. But, meh. I guess I will just have to face up to the music and embrace full adulthood (damn drinking age).

As wierd as it may sound, I hate getting older (obvious for a geezer) but I'm only 14 years old. It sucks. I remember when my only worry used to be whether I was getting invited to my friends birthday party. Now, I've got a job, I'm in a war with zits, and (according to my friends) I need a girlfriend. I wish I could just be.. ten all my life. School sucks, I don't where I fit in anymore. It used to be that you had one group of friends and it didn't matter if one of them was chunkier, or if one of them played Pokemon. Now, I'm afraid to share with my friends that I play Pokemon. Jobs suck, too. I really didn't want to have one, and I don't. But I already need to worry about drivers ed. so I can drive, I need to save for collage, I want to save for my own computer. It just all sucks. And as much as I don't want to get older, I waste away my days. Summer is almost half over and it seems I haven't even realized it has been summer yet. I wish I was in the third grade again... those were the days.
