Battle Factory Woes

I am currently competing in the battle factory...and I was in a battle...I had a Bellossem with these moves:
Sunny Day
Synthesis
Petal Dance
Safeguard

I used Safe Guard and then Petal Dance of course...but to no luck I became confused anyways....then after I was confused my Safeguard ended...but to my luck my Bellossem had a berry to cure Confusion...can someone tell me why I could'nt stop confusion from Petal Dance with Safeguard...I am all confuzzled my self... :confused:

THE OPPONENT cannot inflict any status effects. Petal Dance is confusion inflicted by self.
