Seeing as its 1:30 in the morning and I'm very bored I figured I would post some of my stuff...
Starting with the older stuff we have me dabbling in animation learning tricks to make doing it easier...
DDR sig (https://www.sharemation.com/OttoDestruct/DDRSIG.gif)
Sig I made for a friend of mine
Very pink (https://www.sharemation.com/OttoDestruct/molly.gif)
Never completed this
Rock Lee (https://www.sharemation.com/OttoDestruct/ROCKANISIG.gif)
Just messing around
Quickie (https://www.sharemation.com/OttoDestruct/simplebloodsig4.jpg)
More messing around... didn't finish it
Grievous (http://img264.echo.cx/img264/8535/grievous2xq.jpg)
The simple cherry blossom

Ryu is awesome. So he deserves an awesome sig.

They're nice.Especially the movie ones. But your brushing seems very boring to me...
9/10.

I'm not a fan of overdoing brushing. The background is meant to be exactly that, a background. I can't stand sigs people have where the backgrounds are more a focus than whatever character theyre trying to cut out and put in.

If the background is nice, the sig will look nicer. =]

Different strokes for different folks I suppose.
But for what I kind of mean, this (http://img278.echo.cx/img278/9237/dfds4as.jpg) I find to be absolutely horrible. Theres no attempt to even make a correlation between the background and the main render. Yes the brushwork is nice, but its way too bright, the colors don't work together (ok... they aren't THAT bad.. but not that great), and ultimately feels like it was two random images slapped together. I suppose maybe I just look at things very crticially after taking 3 Graphic Design courses here at the university, taught by a older guy who spent quite some time at the Bauhaus... he rubbed off on me :p .
For reference, the cherry blossom sig, and Ryu sig were made pretty recently, and the others made before I took the classes. I find my abilities have much improved just by looking at focus lines, and by not trying to do too much or using too little with what I've got.
*Edit*
Heres the final draft of the Ryu sig, just touched it up and finished a few minutes ago.

I find your example of too much brushing bad also, but if it goes with the theme, is it still bad? No.

The example (http://img278.echo.cx/img278/9237/dfds4as.jpg) you used has bad brushing as well as bad everything else. It's not a matter of just messing up the render.
I know you said the grevious one was never finished, but I'd have to say that the text is bad on it(the "Don't make me cough on you").
All of your stocks are well cut out, but not blended well, imo.
If the Cherry Blossom one was saved at higher quality(png preserves transparency), it would be awesome.
The quickie one and the rock lee are utter crap, but the DDR one is good. <3

Er... I'm not sure what you mean with the cherry blossom one. It has transparency.

I tried softening the edges of the flower (looks a bit like pixel art now), but all the methods I used ended up looking like poo.

I knew it had transperency, I was talking about the edges of the flower. I understand now.

Well, I seem to have problems with good bitmap texts too. But here's and example of what I believe to be good brushing/bending that helps blend the original render. (Note: I whipped this up a little quick, :/)
EDIT: tinypic seems to always make banners seem worse than imageshak. :/

Heres another example I found of a good simple sig
Link (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v720/zondar/mariosig.gif)
Not any brushing at all. Aside from the fact that I might make it a bit shorter horizontal-wise, I can't see anything to fix. The text is great, well placed. It works together with the render, not each other trying to steal attention away.
In conclusion you dont need brushing to make a good sig. Sometimes it helps, but for the most part, from what I've seen, most people don't understand how to use it in terms of an artistic tool. It's 'eyecandy'.

No one ever said every sig had to be brushed to be good.
Yeah, it could be shorter horizontally.

Yeah, the Mario sig does look nice. I was just saying it usually helps, not always, but I think brushing addsa nice effect, if done right.
Oh well, to each his own, I suppose.
