How many of you have taken upon yourselves to travel the worlds of Myst?

From the first game to the latest one being Revelation, each is a journey of the mind into a reality of imagination which spawned from the books of the ages. I for one consider the Myst series to be one of the best games of all time. If you haven't tried it yet I seriously recommend that you do. But if you have, then tell us about it and what you think of the game. Have you had any difficulty with it (how could you not) or are you still stuck somewhere? Let us know and perhaps my brief guide may help.

When playing Myst I normally turn down the lights to block out everything but the game so it feels even more real. The best thing you can do is have a notebook devoted to this game. I used one that came with the original Myst, its quite nice and there is still enough room for the newest games. In the world of Myst everything is something so don’t leave any abnormality unnoted. Strange symbols, animals or even bugs, and also the way toys and objects operate within a building may mean something later on.

The biggest clues are the Journals. Atrus as well as many other members of his family have a nice habit of documenting their daily lives and studies in these books. Some of them can be quite long, in Riven Catherine’s Journal which looked like a check book was over 50 pages long! This usually intimidates people from reading them but don’t let it, or you will miss something. Each Journal will give you plenty of information on the background of the story as well as some ideas on what to do next. This is how it takes you into the game even further. Read them over a couple times if necessary and write down anything that seems important in your notebook, normally that stuff will seem obvious.

The most difficult thing in this game are the puzzles. Some can be mind bending while others will just make you cry and curse them for torturing you like this. Because of this you might want to give up or just look for the answers online but don’t or you’ll never be able to figure anything out! There is a lot of satisfaction in knowing you can do it on your own and you’ll eventually get used to it as well. In Myst III Exile, the puzzles were more up front and therefore easier, probably because it was made by a different company. This was not a bad thing and the puzzles were definitely not simple, just easier than usual. But the puzzles in Riven and Revelation are much more vague. The best way of explaining it is trying to solve a jigsaw puzzle but you don’t even know if the pieces you have are from the same box as each other.

Yikes! What a nightmare that would be. You will have to end up making some guesses on what you even have to work with too solve the puzzles but that’s where all the clues hidden within the ages comes in. Sadly these clues are very difficult to see, or may not even seem like clues but they are, and its up to you too find them. Like I said, it takes time to get used to it which is why the first Myst game is the best one to start with.

Well I hope this information helps a bit. If anyone has any questions or comments about Myst please feel free to post so we can share ideas and discussion about this incredible game!

That's the exact kind of response I thought I would hear. Ha! Funny...well if anyone has any comments or questions this Thread will always be here. Oh and TsunamiDuelist, you should definitely try out this game. It shouldn't cost too much at stores, you can probably get the first one for $10 somewhere.

I played it so long ago (the first one) and I felt sooooo great when I finally beat it. I haven't tried the later ones are they as good? Man I'd love to see if I'm still smart enough to take on the original Myst...*sigh*

They are as good if not better. For those that don't know they are...

Myst
Riven
Exile
Revelation

The second game which is Riven is quite a challenge, its puzzles are more based on observation. you'd be surprised how nothing could be something. Anyone who can beat such a game deserves credit. I'm still working on it actually, sigh. But Exile is where things really started to change because instead of each view being just a single screen you could actually look all around in 360 degrees plus up and down, they have a word for that. Can't remember what it is. But with this new camera you can see everything you want and and interact with it without interuption.

Each game challenges your mind to its fullest. Take one and see just how far you can go.
