You are currently using 8 MB (0%) of your 2100 MB.
When did that happen lol? Now I have an even more useless amount of space. If I REALLY wanted attachment space, I'd use AIM. TOTAL OVERKILL. =/

O yeah, that's just Google's way of competing with such companies as Yahoo! and Hotmail in the free email thing. I'm not sure why they think that adding space would really help, as I always thought that 1GB of storage space was enough... But I believe I read that Gmail has more storage space than any other free email service.
Nonetheless, I counted 2100mb of total storage space on my Gmail account... Space that I'll never use, but I guess it makes me feel better to know that I HAVE that space, just in case... :p

But exactly who are they in competition with? What free email company gives more than 1 gig of space? :o
Good God ... three gigs. Freaks. ;s

Yeah, I agree with you on that one, SS. I remembered looking at an article on the web about Gmail's expansion, and I dug up this link:
http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/04/01/gmail/index.php
I thought it would be a fairly relevant link to add to the conversation. But, anywho, yeah, 2100mb is quite a lot... The most that you'd see by anyone else, I think, is 1GB at most... That's from what I've found. But I guess Gmail is out to not just compete, but to DOMINATE the competition. I'm guessing that 2100mb isn't going to be the last increase in storage space...
I think sometime within the past 2 months, I looked at the remaining space on my gmail, to see how much mb I'd used up... And I couldn't believe I had 2 gigs. I was like, WTF? When did that happen? It was pretty funny, because I was scrambling to find out whether I had to start paying for it... I just laughed at myself when I found out that I was getting nervous for nothing... :p

I just can't believe that a company would feel the need to increase their size because some people want to use it as addional storage for their harddrive. That's not exactly the purpose of email. If they want more space, tell them to buy another hd.
You can always get free webhosting if you want to send a big file, or you can send it with AIM (it may take awhile though).
That or they could always send another invite to themself. I think the increasing of space is just an excuse for the company to brag about how they're offering so much space and others aren't.

Well, why mess with what works? It may all seem unnecessary in the long run, but perhaps they foresee some profit coming from this expansion... I'm sure there's some people who can actually use every bit of space they can get for actual email, and I'll bet Google makes a LOT of money by way of advertising and such...
But, what I'd like to see NOW is some sort of anti-virus protection. According to the help page, they only have limitations on certain types of files:
"As a security measure to prevent potential viruses, Gmail does not allow users to receive executable files (such as files ending in .exe) that could contain damaging executable code.
Gmail does not accept these types of files, even if they are sent in a zipped (.zip, .tar, .tgz, .taz, .z, .gz) format. Any message of this type sent to your Gmail account will be bounced back to the sender."
That's really not much when you look at it... But maybe they could add a bit more protection, instead of just senseless storage space, that many people either wouldn't use, or just abuse as you said earlier.

Well if it ain't broke, don't fix it, as they say. I don't really mind the increase seeing as I have nowhere near the need for the other 99% of my GMail space, but it's better than having like, less than that, no matter how pointless.

Alright, now I'm curious... Who actually thinks they can use all of their Gmail space? I sure know that I couldn't... Especially since they seem to add to it every week or so...
