Does anyone here play? What's your favorite opening? Favorite Endgame? Have you gone to any tournaments? And do you have an official rating?
My favorite opening is either the Italian or the queen's gambit. I've learned the fisher and the Ruy Lopez, but I'm not fond of them.
My favorite endgame is just simply a rook and a king vs. a king. But that's really generic. The most fun to figure out(and hardest in the beginning for me is this:
5bk
ppp2ppp
8
8
8
PPP2PPP
5RK
For those who don't know, numbers aren't occupied, Capitols are white and lower case is black. P is pawn, R is Rook K is King, B is Bishop, Q is Queen, and N is knight.
If you think you've got this figured out, PM me. lol
I have gone to tournaments at my local chess club, but the only big one in Ohio(to my knowledge) is the Dayton one. I live to far away to go there, but I might be able to get a ride there with a friend for a tourney some time next month.
I don't have an official rating, but according to my tutor(a C player), I'd be roughly a D player. I beat him at times, but I normally get schooled. xD My School rating is 1184. 200 Higher than any other student except my other friend who is about at 1100 or so.
Well? Discuss.

I love chess. Everytime I play I always start out going for the 4 move mate. King pawn up, queen out, bishop out, queen takes bishop pawn. GG
I don't play competitively though.

I did run that, but after about a month, everyone in the club figured out how to counter it. Simple Pawn or knight move counters it.

HAHA. That is hilarious. I used to do that when we made little wagers on games, not much though. I think I made at least $30 on that one opening.
I don't play chess much anymore and I never went to any official tourneys or anything remotely like that. I just play for fun when I have some time by myself, which isn't much.

I'm not competitive, but I'm pretty decent. There were a bunch of people in school who kept asking me to play last year after I went something like 10 games undefeated against them.
I'm not into it enough to learn moves though. I go with the flow and think ahead several steps, but that's about it.

I don't know any of that fancy chess jargon, I just play. I don't play very often, though, but if someone offers a game and I feel up to it, I'll play for fun.

I play chess, but pretty much only at school. My favourite opening is the really common one where you move the King pawn up (hell if I can actually be bothered remembering names).

My dad thought me how to play when I was little as well. I finally gained enough experience and became very good. When I was younger, in my middle school, they were holding some type of chess tournament among all the kids. I can proudly say that I beat everyone I was put up against including the teachers.

I stopped serious play years ago...mostly I just play for fun, whenever I meet someone that can play a decent game. I'm pretty average, I guess, though I once drew a game with some guy who had a 1500 rating, which I guess bumps me up several notches from mediocrity. Chess puzzles I'll sometimes do for fun, though only when I've got nothing better to do. I really like chess in the fact that it is in no way based on luck; a lot of the other games I play at least have some luck involved, and thus could be won purely by fluke.
I just love it when people think they're all hot and then get ++'d in four moves, I've done that a lot.

No serious player falls for those 3-4-move mates. I'm just going to say that now. Don't try using them at a tournament unless you're up against a complete beginner.
When I'm playing black, I typically pull the center-counter defense, which gets me a bit of flack from my teammates... but hey, no one expects it, and it's solid enough. So what if the pros don't play it?
BTW: Center counter runs something like this:
W B
e4 d5
exd5 Qxd5
Nc3 Qa5
And from there, it devolves into chaos. Heck, sometimes they don't even take the D pawn. At any rate, I recomend that someone give that opening a try when playing as black.
As for white, I'm still trying to figure out what opening I prefer the most. Tournament games, I play the standard 4-Knights opening, but only because I haven't developed enough experience with anything else. I'm currently working on a d4-ish opening, but it's been a while since I've seriously studied it.
Yeah, I'm a nerd. Who didn't see that one coming? :D I like me my games but GOOD!!!

Wow. I'm totally off. The only thing I know about it is the basics. Positions, moves, etc. And we used to have chess club at school but then one year only like one person signed up so then they stopped doing it.

Agreed. Hell, most of the 5 year old players that I used to know knew how to counter it.

well, let's just say i've made tons of money off the game. using the clock with extremely low time allowances is the best way. i "mastered" a perfect strategy specifically designed to be utilized using small time limits. it makes my opp panic and waste time, then he/she almost always runs out first and i win.
with no time restaints though, it isn't quite so easy to win money. =[
of course, i do love pulling 15-move mates seemingly out of my arse on pple. catches them almost every time, too. (you won't find this particular move in any book.) unlike very low-number mates, my particular move is extremely hard to counter. you have to catch it within 10 turns. after that, you need both bishops to stop it and if i captured them by then you're SOL. of course no strategy is foolproof, but still.
anyways i can't stand chess puzzles. they bore me to death.
oh anyone ever play chess on the ground using those 3-foot-high pieces? it's great!

I only play chess for fun. Never really had an interest in it until this year, which is the same year I learned how to play. ^_^
Anyways, I like Chess and all, but I'm a Checkers kinda guy.
In my opinion,
Checkers > Chess

Whenever I play someone that looks inexperienced I try for one of those moves just to see if they can recognize it. I go serious after my second game with them though. Funny thing is I hit my best friend with the 4-move mate twice in a row X_X

I used to play chess a lot a few years back, but then stopped as I moved on to high school and I no longer had any free time in school to play, so I stopped. It's a fun game though.

I love chess, My fav oppening is the Fien chetto (only with black, its the pawn up in front of the knight, then move bishop out in back of the pawn the castle) of cours theres of few other moves to reinforce it, I like this opener because it gives off alot of defense and can be hard to break in with out nowing how.
I like finishing it with a knight for forques and rooks for trapping the king.
I do go to alot of school tourneys in miami fl, and our school has one a few.

I remember the students in my German class last term played chess at pervasive intervals. Starting out, I sucked. I got better, but not quite to the extent of good. The best opening I reckon, is using a knight.(the horse shaped pieces if you don't know)

I'm my club's champion now. :)
I usually play the same as always... I'm practicing up on how to use the ruy lopez.
Since Band is over, we should have some more people coming to the club again.... And once the school's fall play is over, we'll have 2-3 more.
Then we can have another tourney. :-)

Whats the Ruy Lopez?..
Eh..I use the Scandanavian Centre Counter Defence if I'm black....
White..eh..I just get Bishops and Knights to the Center as fast as possible and dominate the middle of the board.

I'm pretty good at chess I must say. I didn't start playing until last year when my friend started a Chess Club in our senior year of highschool. He wanted me to join, all my other friends did, so what the hey. My first game I had no clue what to do, all I knew was how to move the pawns and then guessed a little from what I saw the others play. I lost, but did a nice job. After I learned how to play, I won my first actual game. :)
My friends and I play every once in a while, and my friend who started the club in highschool is trying to start one in our college. It's fun to play, its challenging, and it makes you use your brain.

I usually choose black and start off with with a counter to the 4-move mate.

Ruy Lopez is a famous grand master. His style is one of the most famous in chess. It isn't really as much an opening as it is half of a game. Google it.

Believe it or not, I haven't been to a single tournament at all. I may be going to the Best of Phoenix tournament on the weekend of the 19-20, but I may pass on it since there is a large possiblity I could be moving back to Georgia; and they got a boatload of tournaments there.

I (basically) run a Chess Club in my public Library in the summer. During the winter, when I have school work to do, the Librarians take over. As for playing, I usually do the four move mate, and my opponent's (most under 10) never remember it in time. I'm still good though when it comes to actually playing after the 4-move mate is countered. My only rival right now is a little 7-year-old who started playing when he was 2-ish. We're about even.
As for the knight counter to the 4-move mate, I can always bluff my opponent into taking that move back. It's fun to tell them afterwards "You alomst ruined my plans, before I came and scared you out of it :p
Does anyone come across copycats alot? They're pretty common in my area, so the 4-mover becomes a good anti-copycat.
