View Full Version : Other than because they could, why do you think they did it?

Originally, in the original Shaman King Anime, Tao En was Ren and Jun's father. Why do you suppose 4kids changed him into their uncle in the dub? I didn't really see that part, but I heard about it and was wondering about it. Thanks for the input.

Because... uhhh... "Uncle En" sounds better than "Daddy En?"
That's the only thing I can come up with... better sounding... or maybe...
Perhaps 4Kids has a problem with Paternicide? If so, though, why change him to be an uncle? That's still rather close... I don't know. I don't think there was a real reason for the switch. Kind of interesting, though, because I was pondering the exact same question a couple days ago.

I suppose that they changed it again for dubbing issues such as mouth movement. But for the plot it pretty much just brought down my hate factor for En, when hes an uncle you dont care to much for him, but as a father you hate his gutts so much! The bad parenting issue strikes a soft spot in me! :(

Could it have something to do with child abuse? Ren and Jun (and the rest) are fighting Dad because he was evil and treated them bad, making them evil. There is something of a status que here in North America about happy families and home life.

I think this phenomenon can be explained in terms of several otherr incidences. The fact of the matter is, a large amount of parents here in America, rather than deal with their own inadequacies as parents, have decided to blame everything they possibly can for their poor parenting skills. For example, Cookie Monster from Sesame Street has recently been put on a "diet" in which he eats more healthy food and not so many cookies, implying that because wimpy, weak parents are unable to raise their child to listen to them, so instead of looking at themselves for the answer to why their kid is a spoiled brat, they try to blame the monster that eats cookies.
Same goes here. If Tao En was the FATHER, parents would be able to say that the show was instilling a sense of rebellion in children. Which, of course, is absolute bull, but because parents these days don't want to admit that they're bad at parenting, they need a scapegoat. 4Kids Entertainment made the stupid (smart, in some fashions) decision to end the stupid crap before it started. So, basically, Tao En would still be Ren and Jun's father if parents in America would learn to tell their kids to shut the hell up and learn some respect.

Well said... altough they could have used En and say to their kids "See? We're not as bad as that *******! We don't send YOU to the dungeon for torture and then proceed to beat you up!" or "You better eat those vegetables young man or I'll have to use my Over Soul on ya!" :p

I've read lots of the mangas and En is their father but nowhere is mentioned who is their mother... do someone here know or have a little clue of who she was/his?

I have no idea who their mother is. But I'd be willing to bet she had green hair, and long, sexy legs like Jun. And, of course, given the situation, she was probably killed by Tao En because she didn't want Len to grow up all murderous-like. Because En clearly DOES want Len to be a homicidal maniac, he couldn't stand for this, and offed her.
Of course, that's just my theory. And we all know those are two cents a dozen, so come up with your own - save yourself two cents.
And in case you're disturbed by my reference to Jun's "long sexy legs," I urge you to read my reply to flame_champion on the Anna or Tamao thread. I promise, I'm not really a pervert.
