View Full Version : The Griffins vs. The Simpsons, who'd win?

I know this topic was discussed from a different message board so I'd thought I'd discuss it here as well.
Which satirical comedy do you think is better?
Family Guy or the Simpsons?
Make sure you take into account comedy, satire, characters, plot line, etc.
My vote goes to Family Guy. I'm hardly ever into the Simpson's anymore and plus they never even show it on Adult Swim like they do with Family Guy and American Dad.
Though I gotta admit, American Dad was pretty decent. Heck the Griffins could take on the Simpson's anyday.
Here's how I'd see the matchup:
Peter vs. Homer - I see a tie-breaker.
Lois vs. Marge - Of course Lois IMO is better looking than Marge is and plus her hair doesn't even stick 3 feet up. Lois gets the win on this one.
Chris vs. Bart - I got a feeling Bart will win this one.
Meg vs. Lisa - Not sure on this one.
Stewie vs. Maggie - Of course Stewie has the advantage against Maggie. I mean come on, Stewie's got a higher IQ than Maggie. Plus all she ever does is suck on her pacifier. The win definitely goes to Stewie.
Brian vs. Santa's Little Helper - Read above. Brian scores the win like Stewie does.
Mr. Burns vs. Mr. Weed - I think Mr. Burns takes the cake on this one, plus he's more sinister.
The Mayor of Springfield vs. The Mayor of Quahog - I think Adam West takes the cake on this one.
Barney vs. Quagmire - Yep, definitely a tie-breaker.

The Simpsons is much better than Family Guy. What does Family Guy have that is remotely satirical? The most complex of the jokes in Family Guy are some stupid, random scene that has nothing to do with the story of the episode; it's just put in to get some cheap laughs. The city of Springfield has character, life, a soul. The Simpson's story lines deal with major events in American politics. Sunday's episode for example tackles the issue of gay marriage in America. Not to mention that the Simpsons started the animated family sitcom thing.

Remember, Maggie had the intelligence to shoot Mr. Burns (in one side of the story) and scare off the gangsters that came to kill Homer when Marge started that Pretzel business.

No offense, but probably most of the jokes go over your head. There are a lot of jokes satirizing specific TV shows and movies that you would have to have seen to get. There are so many quick and subtle references that are almost impossible to pick up on the first few viewings.
I've seen all the episodes many, many times, but I still find new things every once in awhile.
Family Guy makes fun of pop culture, and unless you know a lot about pop culture, you're going to miss out on a lot.

Woooooow. I had to go through this post 3 times to make sure I was reading what I thought I was reading. Family Guy, if you actually go through each episode and look specifically for examples is absolutely packed with satire. I mean this is to the degree that there is some morsel of societal questioning in every scene in each episode. You will be hard pressed to find a show that offers more than Family Guy - one of the reasons it is brilliant. Anyway, the Simpsons just lost its luster I would say in 2000. Upon watching the most recent episodes, there is waaay too much forced current event or popular themes that are brought up. I mean the rap episode was an example. You will not see Peter and Lois drop a rap like homer and marge did and make it so deliberate that they are trying to play off the rap scene with 50 Cent.

i love how Family Guy constantly makes fun of pop-culture,and as others have said alot of the jokes make fun of Movies/Tv shows/events you would have had to seen to understand
Such as the numerous relations to Dukes of Hazzard in the episode To Live and Die in Dixie
and so many others its impossible to remember them all lol

If you're going to compare the two, compare them fairly. Family Guy was only on for three seasons, while The Simpsons have been on since sliced bread. It's really hard to keep a show funny for over a decade. I agree that The Simpsons aren't nearly as funny as they used to be, like someone said earlier season 1-8 were the best. Family Guy hasn't had time to lose its luster. So if you're going to compare them compare Family Guy to just three seasons of The Simpsons, that way it's fair. If you do that Family Guy loses easily. Yes Family Guy uses satire but it never used it as brillantly as The Simpsons have, plus many could argue that Family Guy is just a clone attempt of The Simpsons, and nothing is ever as good as the original.

Without The Simpsons, there probably would be no Family Guy. That just about says it all. Sure if you compare recent episode of each, Family Guy is better, but look at the whole, and nothing will ever be better than The Simpsons!

could argue? It is! How else do you explain all the similarities? Family guy is just the simpsons with older kids, some of the charachteristics pumped up (a stupider son, a supposedly smarter baby (as qui-gon said, "the ability to speak does not make you intelligent)), and done in different colors. Oh. And a talking dog.

It doesn't matter how long the show's been on, although the commercials for FG Season 4 look pretty stupid. I've never really had much of an interest in the Simpsons. Ever. So my vote goes to Family Guy. BTW aren't polls not allowed?

Huh? Doesn't matter how long a shows been on? Of course it does! It just shows how that the Simpsons had to be good to stay on T.V all these years. Family Guy would not be a show if it wasn't for the Simpsons. It's pretty much a copy of the Simpsons, with some minor differences.

I can't believe what i am hearing from some of you... Family Guy is 10X better then the Simpsons ever were!

To start off, the makers of Family Guy were some of the people who made The Simpsons.
Secondly, most of the people here whos ay Simpsons are better are probably people that have the jokes from Family Guy go right over their heads. Family Gut is made for an audience with a more evolved sense of humour while simpsons uses simple jokes and pain.
Simpsons was good, now it's complete crap. But someone said to compare them evenely and said that Simpsons couldn't possibly stay long enough. Well okay, Simpsons started getting funnya round mid third season. That's pretty much where Family Gut left off. Family Guy has been funny since the VERY beginning while Simpsons took a couple years to develop.
I disagree with the character vs.'s because they are both bad comparisons and don't decide how the show is as a whole.
I like the Simpsons but Family Guy wins simply because they are completely random while still having meaning to their jokes. The jokes are more frequent and more evolved than simple jokes like the Simpsons. The fact of the matter is, the people that don't like Family Guy better, just arn't getting all of the jokes. Sorry if that hurts anyone's feeling but...
Family Guy IMO is better than the Simpsons

That's the most foolish thing I've ever heard. The comedy the Simpsons provided has yet to be beaten. The Simpsons have been going on for years and years, which is something I have high doubts that Family Guy will do.
I'll admit, the Simpsons have lost their touch, BUT, you tend to run out of comedy after the vast time span that the Simpsons have had on air.

Just because a show has been going on for a long time does not mean that it's a good show (That is very specious reasoning, you should know that) ..., people may watch it, but that does not mean it's a good show. In reality, the nielsen rating for the Simpsons has been slowly declining each season. The simpsons have been dumb and dull since the 8th season... like others have stated. It was a good show in seasons 2 or 3 - 7 or 8, but now it's time for the show to take a hike to the dark abyss.
Family Guy is really funny... and i think the antics will last for awhile (atleast more then like 5 seasons... as the Simpsons did) ... besides, i don't think that if the Simpsons had gone off the air earlier it would have been brought back by DVD sales... Family Guy was ONLY brought back on the fact that they sold more merchandise and DVDs then nearly every Show (they are 3rd. in DVD sales).
The unarguable truth is that Family Guy is much better than The Simpsons.
And even if they are similar... Tons of people would have to agree that the humor on the Family Guy can be related to people more than The SImpsons.
The basic idea... while Simpsons is undoubtedly the father of the amazing Animated shows, it's time for the Simpsons to step aside gracefully and let Family Guy take it's place.
Yami100 - what are you talking about???... none of the Simpsons crew (Producers, Creators, etc.) were directly involved in the Family Guy

You are sadly mistaken, young grass-hopper. The Simpsons is original. Original will always be better than the new.
The Simpsons were HILARIOUS from seasons 1-5/6. After that, it started getting a little dull. Not that I could blame them. I mean come on, why don't you try comming up with something to make the audience laugh for years and years? It gets a little tiring to do so.
Family Guy has the same characteristics of the Simpsons. A stupid father, a more logical mother, three children and so on.
I don't see how you can call the Simpsons, a classical show, defeated by Family Guy. Sure, Family Guy has it's funny moments, but I'd like to see people commenting on Family Guy 5-6 years from now, the way they do now.
When something new comes in, the old is forgotten; Not necassarily beaten. In this situation, the Simpsons are still dominate overall, but are slightly on a decline when it comes to making the audience laugh.
And, don't take a page out of my book and re-write it in your own, false words.
The unarguable truth still stands, tall and unconquerable.

Simpsons.
Let us start off my knowing that The Simpsons started as 3 minuter long episodes cut into 5 bits, aired during commercials of The Tracy Ullman show.
Matt Groening created them in a five minute period, as apposed to giving Ullman's producers his "Life In Hell" cartoon, knowing that he would lose all rights.
They were then signed to a season on the baby network Fox.
While all other shows had to go through sensors, The Simpson's demanded that they could sensor what they wanted, or no deal.
They best thing to happen to Fox, they HAD to agree.
Now then, in the age of prim and proper...ism, Simpsons pushed the line every night.
Every Thursday, people would crowd around in their local bar and watch the night's new episode.
Leaving, they would repeat lines such as "Heh, and then he said PIE!", which died down quickly, yet classics like "I choo-choo-choose you" and "I call the big one Bitey" still carry on today.
Now then, with all that accomplishment, overcoming so many obstacles in American Society, how can you say Family Guy is better?
Now, yes it is.
But Family Guy cannot compare to the Golden Era of the Simpsons. (3-8)
Family Guy came from the Simpsons.
Plain and Simple.
No Simpsons, no Family Guy.
The Simpsons set a standard.
Now then, let it also be known that Bartmania swept the nation.
I don't see anything remotely similar with Family Guy.
Final Decision?
Simpsons rules Family Guy. Simpsons is greater than Family Guy. Family Guy < Simpsons. Simpsons > Family Guy.
However you say it, it means the same thing.

I've got more memorable moments from the Simpsons than I have from Family Guy. Maybe it's a product of watching the Simpsons and its eternal repeating much longer than Family Guy, but..what's Family Guy got to match up to Troy McClure singing Planet of the Apes (I hate every ape I see/from chimpan-a to chimpan-z...)? The Stonecutter's Song (Who rigs every Oscar night?)? Or my personal favorite, the Evita parody. Obviously for me the Simpsons are better.
I'd point to the fact that Family Guy got canceled while The Simpsons kept running, but Fox is notorious for having absolutely no idea what shows ought to be kept.
Oh, and Maggie would so totally beat Stewie. She's a crack shot. Stewie's just arrogant and precocious.

Well, sometimes it takes a while to develop an OrIgIoNaL show. If Family Guy didn't have the Simpsons to work off of, they probably would have taken time to develop too.
Here's something else to think about. If Maggie started trying to kill Marge, at least one of the Simpsons would notice pretty quickly. That goes to show the stupidity that exists in the Griffith household.

Family guy is not funny. The jokes don't "go over my head," I understand some of the references, but I still don't think they're funny. I think it's pointless to argue about this since everyone has their own sense of humor. In my opinion it doesn't take a lot of intelligence to cram a bunch of random movie references into every episode unless you do it well. The simpsons does everything well, or at least they used to, up until season 11 or so. Even the newer episodes are more entertaining than family guy though.
The main thing I don't like about family guy is the characters. The simpsons manages to develop the personality of most of the main characters, but the family guy characters are just so 2 demensional. There's nothing redeeming about them. Irredeemable characters work sometimes, like in johnny the homicidal maniac, but on a sitcom it doesn’t work very well for me. When you compare the two, I just have to go with my inner fanboyness and defend the Simpsons. Either way, they are both awesome shows.

Family guy is THE funnist show on T.V, the only one that comes close is chappelles show. The thing that makes family guy so funny isn't that the jokes them selves are funnier, its that there are more jokes and they never "Hit there peak" in the midlle of the show like the simpsons. I am convinced that Family guy is the easiest show to write for because the jokes really don't have any thing to do with the plot.

Over all, it's The Simpsons. I mean come on, they started out as a 3 minute flick cut into 4 parts on a crappy improv show, and turned into the only controversial animated sitcomof the time. They forced Fox, a baby network with no names to it, to let them do their own editing, therefore they were very out there and touched touchy issues.
They have stayed on the air with sensible jokes and sophisticated humor through 16 seasons. Now they are a good show. They WERE a FANTASTIC show. Family Guy got cancelled, and the humor is very....childish at times.
The Simpsons always touches issue in America and makes fun of it in a sophisticated way, and yet still appeals to peoples immature side as well.
The Simpsons are better than Family Guy as a whole.
Also, to all you saying that Family Guy is better it's still really funny, remember that Simpsons are in their 16th season of comedy and aren't going to still be wonderful like they were in 3-8.[/rant]

a fair comparison is probably best done when you compare the first three season of Simpsons vs. the only three season of the Family Guy. Nonetheless, I never liked the Family Guy at all nonetheless, but in the 3 season comparison, Simpsons are better still. the simpsons is a classic. everyone know Simpsons. if you're a nerd and don't watch TV, you know no one will laugh at you when you say that you love the Simpsons. It's also very hard to keep a show on for so long and to keep it funny for so long. classic one-liners such as D'oh! and mmm...doughnut... come from the Simpsons
Being on Adult swim, Family Guy is allowed a wider range of jokes. specifically more "adult" related ones, which are hilarious sometimes. however, not every body who watches Family Guy might understand the jokes they say. Family Guy also delivers enexpected things which have nothing to do with their current situation, which makes it funny.
so, to me, it's a pretty hard choice. both give me a pretty hard laugh. coughcoughfamilyguycoughcough

Also, anyone who watches Simpsons recognizes:
I choo-choo-choose you.
I call the big one Bitey.
Among others.
But in the end it depends on your taste. Random Idiocy, Family Guy. Sensible Hilarity, Simpsons.
For me it's clear, because they have overcome so much.

There's been at least 4 people in this thread who have insisted that their opinion is fact. That just irks me.
Anyway, I'm kinda partial to Family Guy. For a pretty long time, my mom monitered what I watched, and The Simpsons was on the top of the "no-no" list. So now when I watch The Simpsons, I just can't really get into it, having not seen the vast majority of the episodes (I think I've seen about 5). I get a couple of laughs out of it, but I find myself just staring at the screen blankly while some of my friends are busting a gut.
Family Guy, on the other hand, I've been watching from pretty much the beginning. My first ep of that was either the welfare scandal one, or the one with Stewie's birthday and the cult. Something like the Kool-Aid guy bustin' in to a courtroom just to deliver his catchphrase and leave sticks with you, ya know? Family Guy made a good first impression on me. On the other hand, I've been practically hardwired into believing that The Simpsons is a vulgar, unfunny piece of crap (obviously I know this to be untrue now, but it still starts me off with a bias).
Something else about The Simpsons that bugs me is the animation. A lot of it looks not all that goodly drawn (PHEER the master of grammar!), and every episode looks about 30 years old to me. It's like someone covered your TV screen in plastic wrap.
And one last thing; Bart bugs the hell out of me. I just can't stand him. I think I've actually laughed at him once.
So... yeah... I personally prefer Family Guy, but whatever's your cuppa tea. As long as you don't plan to spill it on my head or anything.

.....Thanks for restating exactly what CBASS said.
Anyways, I'd just like to point out that most of what I said IS fact, besides the whole "Simpsons are better and the best and such". because that's obviously an opinion.
They DID overcome great..er...non-wanting, they DID overcome a very 'clean', persay, America, and they DID prosper over it.
Currently Family Guy is better. Yes. Because they are funnier now, by a bit. But if you look at the longrun, and consider what each have gone through, and how it was accpted or not, Simpsons will prosper.
I haven't seen ANYTHING like Bart-Mania, anything that can even COMPARE, in Family Guy.

Family Guy is much better than the Simpsons, the Simpsons has lost their luster now it's been on for like 16 years...

That little fact as opinion thing I said was pretty much directed at people who have said things like "The UNDENIABLE TRUTH is that The Simpsons > Family Guy," or vice-versa.
I honestly don't think there can be one that's better than the other, simply because it's a matter of opinion, and that opinion is based off of more opinion (aka your sense of humor). The only real way to say which one is "better" would be to see which one has the most fans, but I'm pretty sure that that would be a poll, which I'm pretty sure is against the rules.
Therefore, this thread is completely moot and/or against the rules. Either way, it should be locked.

yeah but Family Guy is on Adult Swim so they can have more adult stuff.
sixersballernum3
03-20-2005, 02:43 PM
My point exactly. Simpsons also had Adult material.
But it was on a FAMILY network, Fox. And furhtermore, it was on in primetime.
You kind of just proved yourself wrong.
But yeah this is a flamewar waiting to happen.
Groovy Hedgehog
03-20-2005, 03:32 PM
No I didn't. usally little kids are asleep befor 10 or 10:30. And Yeah Family Guy has alot more bad stuff.
sixersballernum3
03-20-2005, 04:13 PM
Wait, wait, so bad stuff is 'cool' now?
My point is it takes more effort to get bad stuff on in primetime than in late night.
And Family Guy would never have gotten away with all that back when The Simpsons got away with what they did.
Groovy Hedgehog

Well someone said "Flame war" and I came a-runnin', anyway I think that as far as who accually makes me laugh harder Family Guy would win but Sixer is right The Simpsons did kinda Pave the way for ANY "Adult" Cartoon in fact if it wasn't for the Simpsons Family guy would never Have Happened.

The Family Guy = Rip off of The Simpsons
The only thing different is Stewie, and he does crack me up.

Dude, Family guy is not a "Rip off" of the Simpsons, there are Siarities, I'll admit but There are so many shows that could be called a "Rip off" of the simpsons. I perfer to think of it as, Family Guy is the Offspring of the simpsons not a rip off.

The Simpsons was a founding father.
Without SNL, David Letterman, and The Flintstones, there would be no Simpsons.
Without The Simpsons, there would be no Family Guy.
It just sets up a void where shows can come in and take advantage of a new genre, the 'dysfunctional hilarious' genre.
Although Family Guy IS the most Simpson-esque of them all.
Dumb dad, Smart overlooked mom, Nice ignored daughter, Puberic Son, Baby with skills above their age, Pet with role.
fredisgreat
03-21-2005, 06:55 PM
The simpsons didn't have a pet with role, there were a few episodes with Santas little Helper as a part of the plot but I wouldn't call it a "Role"
DarkSoulBlade131
03-25-2005, 08:16 PM
Griffins would pwnz. Stewie would have a death machine that would pwnz Maggie, Chris would fat them to death, Peter would be so stupid Homer wouldn't be able to stand it, Lois is just better than Marge, and Bryan is just so darn cool, Santa's Little Helper would explode.
There... You have it, The end of this debate.

Each has a 50/50 chance of winning. Since the world hears and laughs more at the SImpsons than Family Guy. So Simpsons would win in almost every way I can think of possible.

Well, Family Guy just dosent seem as funny as it used to be IMO. The Simpsons is still great, but IMO Cartman could pwn Homer and Peter. After all, he can make you eat your parents.

This new season of the Simpsons is definitely the worst yet. I love Family Guy, and I think that if we compared the most recent season of the Simpsons to it, Family Guy pwnz the Simpsons. But, compared to the older seasons, nothing could compare to the Simpsons, hands down.
In a fight, Homer could definitely take Peter. Homer was a boxer for Pete's sake! (No pun intended) The only other fight I could see being won is Bart and Chris... That's a tie because Bart would get annoyed by Chris' stupidity. But Stewie could definitely beat Maggie, or anyone else for that matter, because he's just so awesome. "VICTORY IS MINE!!!"

Lightyears ahead?
May I point out that The Simpsons are lightyears ahead, my friend.
Which show was very minutely censored in the time when censorship ruled all? Simpsons.
Which show has remained in Primetime for 16 seasons? Simpsons.
Which show didn't get cancelled? Simpsons.
Which show had people all around the world running around like raving lunatics over a syndrome, known as Bart-Mania? Simpsons.
I rest my case.

Either way, they are both awesome shows.
I agree. Both are great shows and each has its own funny stuff. This is kind of like comparing the PSP and the NDS. Just leave it up to preference.
My preference would be The Simpsons. No reason why, I just like it more. Probably because I (and most people) grew up watching them every night at 6, 6:30/7:30, and 10 and Sundays at 8.

Family Guy can be a funny show, but too many of the jokes are hit-or-miss. The Simpsons stays mostly consistent throughout each episode, but to some people, this might dull the humor down.
