View Full Version : YGO Anime FAQs
Oracle of Dreams

Alright, I've been a memeber of this forum long enough to have seen way to many familiar topics come and go or end in flame wars. So I've created a list of YGO Anime/Manga FAQs that I think are valuable to newcomers (or regulars) of this board. Thanks to all pojo members for helping me devise this list of Questions and Answers.
YGO Anime FAQ
Q: Did Joey Beat Yugi in Battle City?
A: We don’t know. Joey said he would get Red Eyes back when he was a true duelist. He could have given Yugi a run for his money but lost and Yugi gave it back to him or he could have beaten him.
Q: What is the original Winged Dragon of Ra Chant?
A: The JPN version was in Hieratic:
He'i ha'e rayh sureh,
Re'i re'a-re'a re'i areh.
Jhitu nu khetti no ahu reh'eh,
Su tu'aku re'i rayh kureh.
He'i fa eda re'i jhu tu'yu rah!
The ENG version was in…English:
Great beast of the sky,
please hear my cry,
Transform thyself from orb of light
and bring be victory in this fight.
Envelope the desert with your glow
and cast your rage upon my foe,
Unlock your powers deep within
so that together we may win.
Appear in this Shadow Game
as I call your name....
The Winged Dragon of Ra!"
Q: Who do you think would win between [two characters that never actually dueled or finished their duel in the series]?
A: Nobody knows. These topics usually turn into flame wars and never resolve. Chances are that if the creator of the show wanted there to be a conclusion between the two questioned characters’ dueling skills then he would have made them duel. Simple.
Q: In your opinion, what is the worst arc/character/duel/anime card/etc.?
A: Again, anything that has ‘what do you think the worst…” in the title usually turns into a flame war. Just avoid making topics like these. Knowing what other people believe to be the worst arc/character/duel/anime card/etc. is wont’ change your opinion on it and everyone will avoid pointless flame wars.
Q: What is the most powerful Millennium/Sennen Item?
A: It’s debatable. Again, I’ve seen tons of these topics and 99% of them turn into flame wars.
Q: When is the new season of GX going to start in America?
A: The rumors are that it will be aired in 2005. Now that leaves a year (give or take a few months) to air the rest of Doma, KC Grand Prix, and the Memory arc. Do I think they will get it done? Possibly. The point is that GX won’t be coming anytime soon.
Q: How does [insert future plot only available in JPN version here]?
A: Check Janime.net. That site had all you will probably need to answer your question.
Q: Where can I find pictures of [insert character here]?
A: Again, Janime.net or Kokoro No Naka has good pics of characters.
Q: [Insert character here] should have lost against [insert character here].
A: He/She didn’t lose, so it doesn’t matter what you think. If the creator wanted the Character in question to lose he would have made him/her lose. Simple.
Q: Who thinks [insert character here] is the BEST CHARACTER EVER!?!?!?!
A: Probably some people, but I’ll bet there are more who disagree and this will turn into a flame war, trust me.
Q: Does anyone know how 4kids will explain [insert random violent scene here]?
A: They will either butcher it to death or skip it entirely. It’s 4Kids, what do you expect?
Q: Which character has the best deck?
A: Yes, another topic that will lead to a flame war. Whichever one you think has the best deck, does. There, is everyone happy now?
Q: What is YGO ‘R’?
A: YGO ‘R’ is the latest Manga being released in Japan. It takes place after Battle City and before the memory arc. Janime.net covers this in detail.
Q: I hate [random whining here]!!!!!
A: Nobody cares.
Q: [Insert character name] cheats because he/she don't use the cards right.
A:wrong the manga and anime came before the TCG/OCG so they are using the cards correctly.
Q: What happens in the first season?
A:Its the first series and its about Yami doing pentaly games with people.
Q: The pharoah's name is not Atem its Yami!
A:Actually in the orginal (japanese version) and manga the name of the pharoah was Atem.
Q: Do you think [Character A] and [Character B] are a good couple?
A: There are no couplings in the series.
Q: What happened on today's episode?!
A: Janime.net will tell you
Q: Did you like today's episode. How bout the new characters?

I'll add those to the list. My hopes is to compile a 'complete' list and then maybe the mods could sticky it for reference to new users.

OC. Do you know that new comers NEVER read stickies? Look on the anime forum. They go making ne threads on topics that already have "official" threads for the anime. And at the top it says READ THIS FIRST. But do they listen? NO. The thread becomes too long and that's why FAQs will never work. It's faster to just answer their questions and lock or delete the topic or let it fade into the darkness.
As long as morons don't revive dead topics, then it's fine. The problem is that once a question has been answered, no one else should post the EXACT same answer. Once it's answered, that topics done. Unless, you can somehow elaborate in more depth then do so. If not leave it alone instead of incresasing your post count.
[That was for those morons]

Well there should be tougher disclipline for those who break rules then, imo. Regardless of whether or not the sticky is being used, it still exists. If it exists and topics are started using questions from the FAQ list then the user who started it can be disciplined accordingly. With no point of reference or discipline, expect the same dumb questions to appear.

Excuse me for being somewhat cynical, but I'm about to be. I can see some of those, but it seems like you've covered just about everything discussed here, except "What/Who's your favorite [blank]?" topics. So, in your mind, what are people supposed to discuss here?
I mean no offense, I'm merely trying to understand.
Oracle of Dreams
02-23-2005, 03:03 PM
Well there is discussion about the series and about the plot itself without flaming. I've visited many different boards and there is a way, believe it or not, of discussing anime without getting into flame wars about it. The GX discussion topics are going well from what I can tell, and there can be DM topicas that go just as well if they are presented in the correct way.
Nobleman_of_Crossout
02-23-2005, 03:46 PM
I can see where you're coming from, but I don't know if this will help. 8 times out of 10, it's not really the topic of a thread that causes a flame war, it's the people posting in it. Any topic can become a flame war, and around here, most do. There's no real way to prevent it. No matter how many people you reprimand for flaming and arguing, there will always be more.
I suspect the reason it happens more in the DM topics than the GX ones is because there's more of a history there, and more diehard fans, which are likely to become more argumentative.
This FAQ may reduce the number of pointless threads, but as long as there are ignorant people and people who take opinions way too seriously, flame wars will still happen. I hate to be a pessimist (a lot really), but that's just how I perceive things.
Oracle of Dreams
02-23-2005, 04:22 PM
Well I never said it would stop ignorant people, but it will cut down the number of threads that didn't need to exist anyway. Any thread can becomea flame war, but preventing as many as we can, sure helps.
Nobleman_of_Crossout
02-23-2005, 06:30 PM
Okay, that makes sense to me. And I seem to have lost track of whatever point I was originally trying to make (I hate it when that happens). So I will sincerely apologize for intruding upon your thread, and be on my way.
KuroKarasu
02-23-2005, 06:51 PM
Hmm...OK, it isn't a common THREAD, but it might help nonetheless.
Q: When will [insert card name here] be made into a real card?
A: Well, we aren't Konami, so we don't know.

"Odion's" japanese name is Rishid, not Rashid.

03-26-2005, 12:52 AM
Also, that Ra Chant may or may not be correct. I did it, and it's sorta incomplete (As in, after that it cut off, and I couldn't hear anymore or make anything out for that matter.) Plus, there is several other versions of the chant....so you are better off just putting "A Hieratic chant" or something of the such. Since there REALLY isn't a "real" chant...but several different ones.

03-26-2005, 10:07 PM
Speaking of which, does the Japanese version Ra chant mean anything? And if so, was the dub anywhere close to the proper translation?
Ryusaki
03-27-2005, 04:51 AM
The dub chant was just a bad poem. It had nothing to do with the original. Unless there is a hieretic word for 'shadow realm'. Now DarkMalik2's Dub Ra chant was much better ;).
Horoko
03-27-2005, 01:13 PM
Ahem....that was ME who wrote the chant out (Which gives for my explanation on the last page.)
YaMiMaRiK528
03-27-2005, 01:32 PM
Just 3 things.
Bonz's goons' names in the dub are Sid and Zygor.
Rebecca's last name in the dub is Hawkins.
Iron Heart and Christ's pet's name in the dub is Sky.
Pharoh Atem
03-27-2005, 02:22 PM
How about this?
Q: Where can I find pictures of [Insert episode]?
A: Go to Janime.net and you'll find a majority of the episodes including GX.

Ahem Horoko, I was talking about Darkmalik2's DUB chant. You must have heard it. Can't remember it right now but it was hilarious. Somebody must be able to remember it.

Here it is ;)
"Great Beast of the Sky,
Please do not cry.
In Egyptian dead language, should I not speak?
Instead of perfectly rhyming English, week after week?
Ah, screw it all, don't shed a tear.
Just get the hell outta that goddamn sphere.
Envelope the desert with your shining brass,
And help me beat the pharaoh's ass!
WINGED GRAGON OF RA!!"

I had a little time yesterday, so I added on to my previous collection of cards used into the anime. It goes up to the present dub episode. (172)
I'm pretty sure that's everything. If something's missing, tell me.

Since there REALLY isn't a "real" chant...but several different ones.
eh, it'll suffice for the people who neeeeed to know, lol.

I don't think there are legal full episode downloads. I'm not sure about, say, 2 minute previews. Some official websites have previews. The only legal way to see Japanese episodes is to order the DVDs from a site like CDJapan.
Note: Japanese DVDs are Region 2.

And is Roba his family name?
Horoko

Esper is probably a nick name. However, it's odd, since the "Dinosaur" and "Insector" part of the name with Ryuzaki and Haga is in katakana, while Roba's name is all in katakana. So, Esper is probably his real name...or something, maybe.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! Character Guide is a special book that was published by Jump right after the release of manga volume 31, which marked the end of the Battle City finals and the main story arc of the manga. The character guide is not yet released in English, although Volume 31 is slowly approaching so only time will tell.
You can still purachse this book in Japanese though, even in the states it can be easily found at a local Japanese bookstore. I was able to purchase mine at a bopoth at a local anime convention.
The character guide is very helpful, containing bios of every character, a Yami no Game countdown, info. on all characters decks and combos as well as every card played in the manga, and it also has a built in RPG game for extra amusement.
Not to mention having two exclusive OCG promo cards packaged in as well, Kessoku-Unity and Yu-Jyo Friendship.

I'm not sure if this is accurate, but Wikipedia has an entry for both characters under their YGO anime and manga characters listing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yu-Gi-Oh%21_anime_and_manga_characters). Their GX listing was helpful for clarifying the full names of Yuri Edogawa, Momoe Hamaguchi, and Junko Makita in GX so I am inclined to trust it... It lists the duo as Satake and Takaido. :)

all right, I have a few interesting questions.
1.) How can Malik be more tan than his older, blood related sister if he has never even seen the sun before? (Or maybe it was just a hidden gene)
2.) Was it just chance that the person to find the sennen puzzle just happens to look like the person trapped in it?
3.) Why have none of the main girls ever been seen wearing pants in the anime?
4.) Since Yuugiou is a popular kid’s show, there are plenty of clothing and toys on the market. However I’ve noticed that there isn’t any clothing or accessories for girls. If you ask me, that is completely sexist. Why don't they come out with any? There are plenty of female fans out there.
Horoko
08-12-2006, 09:27 PM
1.) Probably because he takes after his father or something. (That, or the manga-ka didn't realize that foreign babies usually aren't tan from birth.) Whatever the reason, it just is.
2.) Considering that the puzzle wasn't found for 3,000 years, I'd say it was more like fate that Sugoroku found it rather than plain dumb luck.
3.) Shizuka was originally wearing a pair of blue jeans the entire Battle City arc, but in the anime, she is seen wearing a pair of shorts. Other than that, it's really not known why exactly. Maybe they all perfer skirts to pants.
4.) Uh, it's business. Kind of the same reason you don't see that many female Pink and Yellow Power Rangers action figure slots empty in the toy stores.

You'd have to take that up with Mattel (or whoever produces those cheap things.) I wouldn't have any idea (I hardly buy enough Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh! products as it is. The last thing I bought was Sound Duel II three years ago, and I've lost the cover to it.) I'm guessing it's because that's who they're made for, (EX: try finding a Pokemon shirt over children's size and you probably won't.)

you might want to add these to the first page becouse a lot of new members do ask what was enditd out of the english version i know a lot of people that have never seend a japan version of yugioh and i have told them to come here to find out about the japan version
Japanese version assumes that the viewer has read the manga series. The changes made in the English-language versions of the second series anime include:
Americanization of character names
replacing the background music to suit a younger demographic
Replacing each of the Japanese opening themes (Rock/Pop songs by various groups) with a single(instrumental song done on a synthesizer.
reworking the plot in certain parts of numerous episodes and story arcs, mostly for censorship reasons, but also for unknown reasons.
removing all instances of weapons
removing scenes where two or more characters are fighting.
removing or obfuscating many references to religion, such as the pentagram or hexagram.
removing or rewriting scenes where characters die or are in real danger of death (In the English anime, characters are instead threatened with the possibility of going to the Shadow Realm, or in some cases they are "captured").
removing or editing scenes where monsters undergo some form of violent death (such as being eaten or being stabbed)
removing scenes where characters make obscene gestures
editing scenes where a female (or male) character or Duel Monster appears to be nude or might be wearing something too revealing.
changing the setting of the country from Japan to United States.
removing assorted sexual innuendo
removing much writing in Japanese and English (this resulted in the unusual
design of the Duel Monsters cards in the English version of the series).
removing any kind of references that could be accused of causing children to develop bad habits (truancy for example).
To get around FCC rules concerning advertising in shows, as well as to make the show more marketable in non-English countries, all the cards in the show have been painted over to feature only the card illustration, card element and the attack/defence of the card if it is a monster card.

also so poeple will stop asking what is taken out i think these should be added to this topic first page it helps keeps some of the ? down about what is edited and why is was changd
Chaos Swordsman
02-22-2007, 07:53 PM
FCC isn't the thing to place everything bad on, 4Kids do deserve blame too, and not all editing is force; some is made out of just plain stupidity on 4Kids part.
EX: "Chazz remembers his card spirits this whole time when hes in the society!"; "Banner set up Jaden's duels so he would win!"; "Atem's name is Yami, hes not looking for his memorys!"; "Zane is part of a ancient Cyber Legacy", etc. Also adding in bad puns and dialouge when theres silence and putting in sterotypes for characters (Frost, Lorenzo etc)
The reason theres no english writing in the english anime is due it to being illegal to advertise stuff like that on shows (or something like that).
Also, How excatly is Hallelujah for older ages? :p Awsome music too.
And I don't believe the FAQ updates anymore, its been a long while since it has. (2 years actually)
Horoko
02-22-2007, 09:38 PM
The FCC's jurisdiction doesn't really extend on to cable, though. It's more a matter of the network's decisions and whatever moves 4Kids wants to make on their own part.
jaws_is_ra
02-22-2007, 10:01 PM
but i have hear why the card looks have changed some many time and thye blame 4 kids for that i heard why do htye take a way guns and 4kids gets blame for that when the fcc has rules but 4 kids gets all the blame i think htye need to put blame were blame should be put no to just one place but to many places
Horoko
02-23-2007, 10:40 AM
The cards being changed, for whatever reason, has to do with copyright issues with using the likeness of real cards on television. The FCC is strict, but not as strict as to make some of the changes 4Kids does. The FCC has no control over plot-changing information that doesn't deal with death or the occult, and instead, deals with important facts that make the story flow along correctly. (And like I said, since GX is on cable, it doesn't really have to get the tired and hackneyed treatment its other shows do which air early on local channels.)
So, yes, the blame does square on 4Kids, because if any other of the big five anime companies had gotten ahold of it, I'm assuring that it wouldn't be half as bad. (I'm not too sure on Viz, since they like to give their properties to different divisions who do things different depending on who they are. But, hey, they did Bleach and Naruto justice...just not that much on Gash Bell.)
Roland

4kids entire production department is poor to a standard from writers to VAs and music composers. This could be a department or managerial issue that affects the performance.
It just feels like the 12 or so writing staff are goofing around having a giggle at each others puns as they type the script up.
The VAs are very limited as a staff number and sound like they do very little rehersal or understanding of the chararcters there playing before recording. I do actually blame the writers more for this as they probably don't give the VAs enough background information on the individual characters. (if they read the original script more thoroughly they would) I have to admit some of the VA staff are exceptionally good (eg. Mike Pollock).
The music composers sounds like it's done by 1 guy and a very generic band.
It also sounds like the music director just likes synthed rock and techno done on keyboard. Either that or not much attention is put into the music department and quick catchy BG themes are rushly made with little thought. (I'm looking at you Sonic X)

Don't forget though, that some of the card names have to be changed because Magic the Gathering already copyrighted the name. That's why Reigeki had to stay Japanese, rather than being translated to Thunderbolt.

They copyrighted calling their card's names. Thunderbolt is fair game do long as you're not making TCG's.
And as for a FAQ:
Why didn't (Character A) do (Move X) to defeat (Character B)?
Because the writers didn't want them to. Or they didn't notice it. You've probably missed a win before too.
