Source: MGM February 3, 2005

Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers of the James Bond films, and MGM announced today that Martin Campbell will direct Casino Royale, the 21st film in the 007 franchise.

This is Campbell's second time as helmer of a James Bond film. In 1995 he directed the hit Goldeneye which introduced Pierce Brosnan to the role of 007 with great success.

Wilson and Broccoli said: "We are thrilled that Martin has accepted our offer to direct 'Casino Royale'. He is an extremely talented director and we believe he will help take our films in a new and exciting direction. He is currently finishing filming 'The Legend of Zorro', the sequel to 'The Mask of Zorro', and will be joining EON Productions shortly to work on the development of the script with our writers, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade."

MGM Vice Chairman and COO Chris McGurk said: "Martin is an incredibly exciting filmmaker. 'Goldeneye' was a wonderful movie and helped reinvigorate the Bond franchise. We're thrilled to have him back to direct the newest Bond."

Born in New Zealand, Campbell moved to England in 1966 and made his directorial debut on the popular TV series' The Professionals and Minder. He moved to America in 1986 to direct Criminal Law and Defenceless. Following Goldeneye, he went on to direct The Mask Of Zorro, Vertical Limit and Beyond Borders and is currently directing The Legend of Zorro.

Casino Royale will be released in 2006 and distributed world-wide by MGM. No decision has yet been made regarding casting for the role of 'James Bond'.

After the trainwreck of a film "Die Another Day", this looks like a step in the right direction. Looking forward to it.

Ooh! Nifty. Still, 007 isn't the same without the original actor for Q...

Trainwreck that was "Die Another Day"? Sure some of it was bad, but as a die-hard bond fans who HAS SEEN EVERY BOND FILM more than at least a half dozen times each, it was by no means a trainwreck. In fact, it was my second favourite Brosnan Bond. Tomorrow Never Dies, that was a trainwreck.

I agree with Will. I've seen every Bond film once, the Brosnan ones multiple times. (I made it a mission to se all of them, just for my purposes)

I rather enjoyed Die Another Day, and Goldeneye was my fave.(Brosnan-Wise) I would not consider Die Another Day a trainwreck at all.

I agree. I loved Die Another Day, but hated Tomarrow Never Dies.

I look forward to seeing Casino Royale.

*will miss Brosnan as Bond*

Pierce was the guy that I first knew as Bond, and I also miss the original Q. I do hope that they can keep Dench as M, though.

I just hope they don't massively miscast and end up with like Conan O'Brien as Bond, or something...

For some reason I would like to see Colin Farrell as Bond. I think he would pull it off. Either him or Ewan McGregor.

Conan would be awesome as Bond! For maybe, like, one movie.

I don't know about Ewan Mcgregor. If he got the role, I'd keep on seeing Obi-Wan rather than Bond. The only suggested actor I don't want to see as Bond would be Hugh Jackman. I dunno, he just doesn't seem "Bond" to me.

It's Bond, I will buy the DVD release (like I did all the others, minus 4 I still have to hunt down). I will most likely enjoy it.
I'm not sure who would be a good fit for James though...I'll have to think on that one.

I've seen 2 or 3 bond films and I thought they where boring. I'm a girl though so this type of movie is beyond my comprehension.

You're a girl and you can resist the sexual charm of Bonds such as Sean Connery? Wow. He's so dreamy :p

i cant watch any Sean Connerys or roger moores bond fims (except for a view to a kill, christopher walkern, the baddess bond villain)

Sean Connery is too bland and boring and roger moores bond films are too camp. timothy dalton is the mans violent bond and brosman was a good bond aswell.

colin farrel ? no way, too young
jude law. boring
hugh jackman - acceptabl
daniel craig - good choice
clive owen - sleepwalked through king arthur but was excelent in croupier
colin salmon - could be a good bond
dougary scott - pretty good choice
colin firth - nope.

i just pray they dont cast an american. no offence to our american cousins but bond is british and should remain british not sell out for box office £££

Heathen....that's all I have to say...you're a heathen.

We've been watching the first few of each actor's career....I have Goldfinger on DVD, Thunderball was on cable a little while ago...Then, Live and Let Die and Man with the Golden Gun followed by Moonraker were on...I think they were doing some sort of Bond festival...but at least it was uncut with no commercials. My wife is not as big a Bondy as I am...She hadn't seen Thunderball...which is still the 3rd best Bond (Goldfinger, and From Russia with Love are my 1 and 2).

No, that wasn't a real Bond film.

There's a Fleming novel, which is what the upcoming movie is based on.

I have to agree with Will. I always liked Roger Moore and his approach to the charming and witty side of James. And of course, you can't spell, um... Sean Conn-bond-ery without, er, Bond...

Yes, there is already a movie entitled "Casino Royale". It was not included when Fleming sold the rights to Cubby Broccoli, since it had been optioned separately, and filmed for televsion at least twice. The film version is a complete spoof (and not very good either), with Woody Allen and a cast of hundreds. Don't bother, it's pure trash.

I'm sure there's a VHS floating around with the Barry Nelson tv version, but it's really badly dated. Casino Royale, the first of the Bond novels, isn't all that interesting, outside of introducing the character. It's actually quite dull.

Sean Connery ! he cannot act !, hes only been good in indiana jones and the Untouchables, he ruins nearly very film hes in, take leauge of extrodinary gentlemen , alain quatermain talk about bad casting, the villain in the avengers ? well maybe he needed to pay a few bills.

Timothy Dalton is the most underated bonds, he was the mans bond.

The only good bond films are, a view to a kill, the living daylights and golden eye. The last few since goldeneye have just been crap.

Connery is awesome (Extraordinary Gentlemen is just a bad movie). I still think he's the best Bond.

Martin Campbell, who directed Pierce Brosnan's first turn as James Bond in Goldeneye, is returning for the 21st film Casino Royale, based on the first Bond adventure written by Ian Fleming in 1953. MGM is targeting for a November, 2006 release.

The director talked to the New York Daily News about the movie, which will feature a new actor as 007. "There are things that will have to be changed from the original novel," says Campbell. "The Cold War elements will have to be reconfigured, for example, but 'Casino Royale' will be a grittier, tougher and more realistic Bond movie.

"We'll be getting away from the huge visual effects kind of films," he added. "In the new film, Bond is essentially starting out in his career, and has just recently become part of the double-0 section."

"The idea is to put a bit of the dash back in Bond. By the end of the movie, the character will have been forged into the wiser, harder Bond we know."

You smell that? That's the smell of awesome. Sort of reminds me of Batman Begins.

Sean Connery ! he cannot act !,

Off topic yes, but I found this interesting:

http://www.sky.com/showbiz/article/0,,50001-1172370,00.html

Even though I don' think Connery is better than Hopkins or Guinness, its a hell of an honor to even be on that list. Those are some of the greatest actors of all time.

So yeah, he can act, Greg. :p

I like decent sentence structure. If you are going to post, at least post something that contributes to the topic. "I liek b ond is sooo cool" is just spam.
