DISCLAIMER: If you want to read about a good player using a good Lancer Frog deck at Philadelphia, I suggest you check out this tournament report (http://www.pojo.biz/board/showthread.php?t=1051451) where Pasquale Crociata makes a most excellent 6-3 run. If you would prefer to read about a man who picked up the deck a week prior, got shafted the first few rounds, and proceeded to pull a Merovingian*, I honestly question your taste in entertainment but you've come to the right place.
Bolded information is for those tl;dr readers who want to know the matchup and end result, italics will be background information and thoughts during the event, and normal text will detail just the games themselves, so with that aside let's get straight to the matches.
[Round 1] Chain Burn
I end up waiting another 30 minutes after getting to the table, but thankfully I'm surrounded by really chill players and one humorous commenter. My opponent is from Team Jank and piloting a deck that he made and six other people are also running. He goes first.
Game 1: He opens with two S/T sets and passes. I throw down Heavy Storm, to which he chains Legacy of Yata-Garasu and Jar of Greed. Realizing it is most likely Chain Burn and that many variants play Dimensional Wall / Magic Cylinder, I proceed to poke down with Frogs and Gachi Gachi Gantetsu whenever possible. When he gives me Lava Golem with the help of Ojama Trio I am forced to Dark Hole myself and keep spamming low-level monsters since I'm not drawing tributes. (It is at this point that I regret not running Shining Elf in the Extra Deck as well.) I manage to get him down to 1400 LP despite being stalled out repeatedly but he manages to set up double Chain Strike + Accumulated Fortune and finish me off a turn later.
Game 2: I never have more than one monster on the field and then eventually Tribute Summon Prime Material Dragon to prevent all the incoming burn. He plays around it for a while and relies on his trap draw cards and Swift Scarecrows to dig for answers but when Royal Decree comes down a few turns later he struggles and scoops. The game ends right before time is called.
This is only obvious in retrospect, but as you'll see later I honestly should have drawn the game here. I'm about to raise my hand to call the judge but my opponent suggests we side and get our opening hands so that we go into a Game 3 and not draw. I agree due to how the tiebreaker system works and I still have hope that I can make a solid run for Day 2.
Game 3: I never see Prime Material Dragon and draw Royal Decree on Turn 5, which is two turns too late since on Turn 4 he burns me for a ton of damage and I don't have strong enough monsters to make up the difference.
Even with the loss I'm still in good spirits since it was a reasonably close match and I learned from the experience. This attitude won't last long though.
0-1-0, 0 pts.
[Round 2] ???
My opponent doesn't show up. I don't enjoy this much since this will negatively affect potential tiebreakers but mostly because I don't get to play a competitive match for at least another hour and I'm still kinda amped.
1-1-0, 3 pts.
[Round 3] Chaos Dragons
Unfortunately, this is the last game where my opponent is outwardly pleasant until Round 7. This will set the tempo for the rest of the day. I believe he goes first.
Game 1: He draws and activates Future Fusion for Five-Headed Dragon and then continues setting up on me with Charge of the Light Brigade into Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter. Thankfully I have the Mystical Space Typhoon and play defensively for a while, dropping Effect Veiler on his manually-flipped Ryko to slow him down, hiding behind a Battle Fader and Frogs while making Gachi + Sea Lancer whenever possible. I eventually plan on making Number 96: Dark Mist but he mills Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, Monster Reborns it and starts running through my Xyz like butter. Swap Frog + Caius the Shadow Monarch helps break up his defense a little bit but he has too many dragons to deal with at this point and no number of Battle Fader, Tragoedia, and Gorz the Emissary of Darkness is enough to let me dig for answers.
Time is called as we go into Game 2.
Game 2: He opens no immediately-summonable offensive threats and I Veiler his Ryko again. He attempts to make Ancient Fairy Dragon on Turn 4 and swing directly but another Fader comes down and an Electric Virus on AFD lets me swing into his open field for the draw on Turn 5.
He's amazed that we draw and have a bit of a laugh about it. This is also the last time there's any end-of-match joviality until Round 7 as well.
1-1-1, 4 pts.
[Round 4] Chaos Dragons
I can tell my opponent is a bit disappointed in his 1-1-1 record but he remains courteous and civil through the match. Too bad I'm about to (unintentionally) rain on his parade even further. He goes first.
Game 1: Honestly, it's a lot like Round 3 Game 1 but instead of Future Fusion and Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon I get my head handed to me on a silver platter by Photon Strike Bounzer. I'm playing Lancer Frogs, however, so it still takes him forever to do so.
Time is called as we go into Game 2.
Game 2: I stall past the five-turn limit and eventually make five-Frog Lancer + Gachi and safely poke over an invalid Honest target for the draw.
I apologize to my opponent and wish him luck. It does nothing to help his bad mood, but what else can I do? I still have a chance to Day 2 on points even if I can't make Top 32 proper, and honestly so does he.
1-1-2, 5 pts.
[Round 5] Dark World
This is the only match that got me angry. My opponent might be a decent guy outside the game but playing against him? **** that ****.
Game 1: He tries to use Deck Devastation Virus to continuously kill my Gachis throughout the three turns, I have to get a judge to convince him it just affects my draws past the first turn. He tries to say Skill Drain negates the Battle Phase negation of Fader, I have to get a judge to convince him the effect activates in the hand and still goes through. He gets really salty and more aggressive, and even with rulings on my side he eventually beats me down with double Grapha because my hand gets wrecked repeatedly.
Time is called as we go into Game 2.
Game 2: He manages to get in a 600 LP poke but I clear his Grapha and drop D.D. Crow on it, hitting for 1200 with Swap Frog and two Ronintoadin then make Dark Mist with Fader in hand. He gets out Snoww, Unlight of Dark World and I believe he revives Gorz (it was some other strong monster) because he thinks Dark Mist only works once during the Battle Phase. I have to call a judge for the ruling yet again, so I get the draw and he drops from the event.
that's right, you walk away
1-1-3, 6 pts.
I can't make Day 2 anymore, but a friend of mine is still 3-2 so I decide not to drop this round and continue trolling people into time.
[Round 6] ???
Wow, Epic Dawn is really popular.
I'm not gonna get a legitimate match win today am I
2-1-3, 9 pts.
[Round 7] Inzektors
Finally, an opponent in a good mood! Unfortunately, I can't completely say the same for myself. My friend might still be 4-2 but I go into the match with the intention to draw the game and then drop because I'm tired and want to ruin tiebreakers, which is the real meaning of "Poison Draw" in the title.
Game 1: I end up rope-a-doping this guy. Fader into Dark Hole on his initial swarm followed by repeated abuses of Veilers, Lancers, Frogs, and Trags grind out a win despite the swarm capabilities of Inzektors repeatedly poking at my Life Points. It takes me forever to win, but at least it was back and forth.
Time is called as we go into Game 2. I decide not to side just to see what he does.
Game 2: He sided quite well for me. I survive through the five turns and he wins on Life Points but it's obvious he would have had this game anyway had we had unlimited time.
I drop
2-1-4, 10 pts.
So there you go, a 2-1-4 record that could have been at least a 4-0-3 and maybe a Day 2 had I bothered to practice more, use Cardcar D instead of my janky tech, and take advantage of the clock more often. Still, for having only practiced the deck in under seven days and playing through all of my worst matchups until Round 7, I can't be mad.
The following day I made a troll Mizuho + Shinai deck and legitimately won a Yuma + C39 mat. Not gonna bother you with all the non-YGO details from the weekend but Philadelphia is a wonderful city, Pat's >>>>> those xenophobic hacks at Geno's, and I love Delaware's lack of sales tax.
