I used to believe it was allowed from reading previous statements from Bushiroad but I have recently been corrected. You are NOT allowed to send a unit to the drop zone without a reason. http://bushiroad.fm/post/en/481/Retire+A+Unit.html#comment-4100

To quote for those who don't want to click the link:

As for the question: 'can I retire unit for no reason?',
the answer is: no, you may not.

In order to retire a rear-guard unit already on the field, you will need to:
1) call another unit to replace that unit.
2) as a result or cost of another ability.

The playbook that comes with the trial deck makes it pretty clear imo.

The RG only moves to the drop zone if another unit is called to that circle, if the unit is successfully attacked, or from card effects.
