well today was the first day set two was available at my locals and being the dumb**** that i am, i spent close to 60 bucks on single packs and pulled nothing close to trade bait.
So how do you guys get good cards? buying singles, packs, or boxes? Which one is the cheapest alternative in the long run in getting the cards you need

If one deck is all you're after, then you'd probably go for singles. As far as trade bait goes, you need to get sealed boxes since they have guaranteed ratios.

Boxes and singles. If you just want trade bait if you find perfect guards or chase cards scoop them up and then trade up and down with them.
if you want to kill 2 birds with one stone get boxes for both trade bait and cards for your deck.
I would suggest not buying a box just to pull 1 or 2 cards though (if the set just came out and you need alot of cards get the box)

I'd like to add to this thread for a related question.
So to make a deck, it's suggested to buy singles unless a good number of the cards need to come from a certain pack, right? What if one of the cards is mondo expensive RRR (say $24 a piece, cheapest), and you need at least 3 to 4? Would it be suggested to buy the singles still or try your luck with the box?
Long version:
I'm making a Kagero deck, and the "other half" + the heart of the deck comes from the second booster pack, Onslaught of the Dragon Soul or whatever. 3 (or 4, depending) copies of Blazing Flare Dragon, the heart, at $24 a piece, but at least 4 copies of 4 different cards need to come from that pack. That's a total of 20 cards, 5 different cards and rounding to $103 to $110 total. Based on this situation, should I go box, or should I go singles?

If what you need are commons and rares and the blazingflares I guess you could say the box is ok to get... You have the chance of pulling that blazing but either way You will need to trade what you don't want off for the rest.
If you want to play safe you go straight to the singles (partially because you can't invest in box+singles) either way you will end up with what you want it's a matter of how urgent it is to have them

Best way to stay up to date with the game is buy one or two boxes each time a set comes out and then trade/buy singles that you need.

thats pretty bad ._. buying two boxes only assures you a set of the commons...
Even though commons are in high demand at some places its almost impossible to push off all your unwanted foils.
Staying up to date is best by just picking up singles if you dont want to get out there and spend for multiple decks.
Stay up to date by at least reading all the new set cards if you arent going to buy boxes and would rather just play.
If you do end up buying a box of set 2 then you get your commons and you have a risky chance of trade bait that can be traded up for better or more... given you are good at trading lol.

A) I said one to two.
B) This gives you the commons you'll need plus cards you need or can trade for what you need.
C) More appropriate for people who run more than one deck.
D) A lot better to buy boxes and singles than to buy packs, at least this has been my experience.
Overall, YMMV.
I've only bought 1 of each trial deck and 1 of each box and I have 2 incomplete decks that still win more then they lose. Just last Saturday, My SB beat Grand Blue 3 out of 4 times (lost due to horrible opening hand) then lost to Paladins cause I forgot how to deal with SSD at the time. Then I switched to my Kagero deck that only has 1 null shield and beat the Paladin deck twice after that.
So, it doesn't take much to keep up with this game.

Honestly, it's pretty hard to lose money with a box. You will pretty much at least break even every time. If there are a lot of people to trade with in your locals, I'd recommend buying a couple boxes. If not, then just go for the singles. Cracking packs is always fun though haha.

Yeah, the only way for me to trade with people is to "go the distance", and that's time I do not have, because that's up to two-hours transportation, and the only times to meet are sadly RIGHT after my classes. Don't care if it'll cost me $100, singles it is.
Thanks, airbourne.

Time to throw my derpyness in.
So I've added up all of my expenses on the game in the last month. I started about a month ago, by buying two overprieced Trial Decks (Both RP mind you), and a very overpriced box ($90). Since then I've bought singles from two boxes and a full sealed box. After adding up all of my foils that I have gotten last night, it came to around $440. I've doubled my money on my foils alone. This is not counting the playsets of commons from set 1, and all of my rares.
Personally, I'm very stupid for buying single packs. However, I've spent less and gained more in the process. I wouldn't recommend it.
With sealed boxes you'll always break even between commons, rares and foils. Believe it or not, people are always looking for all three! On my first box, I obviously lost money because I paid way too much. I've since made up for the mistake. For starting out and getting trade bait, I'd recommend sealed boxes of Set 1 to trade for the stuff you need. I've successfully been able to trade/sell everything that I pull.
Like I said, people are looking for EVERYTHING.
Hope I helped some. If anything needs further explaining, I'll gladly try to offer more of an explanation.
