[Author’s note: First off, I’d like to thank Venusaur for the idea. He really spured me into thinking about Blissey. Most of the information here I’ve posted in a response to Venusaur, although I’ve added a bit. This “essay” is more suggestive than informative; I don’t like being redundant in printing what can easily be found in a POKEdex. (I am writing this assuming 386.)]

Blissey is undoubtedly one of the greatest pokemon of all time. Most commonly used as a Heal Beller in GS, as well as the ultimate special sponge with Counter, can now get both Heal Bell and Counter at the same time. She also receives the benefit of having a special ability: Serene Grace. This means 51% burns with fire blast to cover up for her physical weakness. Not only that, but she gets 20% freezes with Ice Beam. Whoa. And with Aromatherapy over Heal Bell, nothing is going to stop her from healing the party of status. She can also get reflect, along with all of these.

As for EV distribution, with any set 252 EVs in defense is absolutely necessary, no matter what set you’re using. You go from 56 to 119, more than doubling your defense stat. With that said, perhaps the most obvious response would be to give her a Bold nature. However, Blissey’s max defense without a beneficial nature (but with 252 EVs) would be 119. A beneficial nature give it 131, leaving a difference of only 12. Rather, even without EVs in special defense, the change is rather dramatic, going from 306 to 337, an increase of 31. And for special attack, (once again without any EV points) the difference is 19, going from 186 to 205. So, numerically, the greatest stat increase comes from having a Calm nature.

After putting 252 EVs in defense, it would be best to put 252 in HP, so she has added survival. As for the remainder, they would be best spent in special attack, unless she’s not going to be attacking.

Blissey@Lefties/Bright Powder
-Ice Beam
-Aromatherapy
-Fire Blast
-Rest/Soft Boiled
*Calm nature, 252 defense/252 SA/6 SA

The idea with this move set is to be an Aromatherapist when necessary, as well as being used a special sponge in situations in which it is necessary. She takes advantage of Serene Grace with both of her offensive moves. The burn from Fire Blast helps protect her while she sleeps, if she carries Rest. The hold item is really just a matter of preference. Reflect is not necessary, as you have Fire Blast for defense.

Blissey@Focus Band
-Ice Beam
-Counter
-Soft Boiled
-Reflect
*Modest nature, 252 defense/252 HP/6 SA

This is for hitting those physical attackers back hard. Reflect is for making sure she doesn’t get OHKOed by Machamp, who will inevitably become more popular after her release. Ice Beam is so she can attack special attackers.

Blissey@Lefties
-Calm Mind
-Reflect
-Fire Blast
-Ice Beam
*Modest nature, 252 defense/252 HP/6 SA

Sweeper tank. Calm Mind will make her virtually immune to special attacks. Reflect and Fire Blast protects her against physical attacks. And Ice Beam gets 20% freezes. Switch out against fighting types, as all of her healing will have to come from Lefties, and she can’t afford to take a huge amount of damage before she starts setting up.

As for Blissey counters, the most obvious would be hard hitting fighters. Focus Punch while she uses Aromatherapy. Brick Break for getting rid of Reflect. And Cross Chop+Scope Lens for straight out damage.

Another alternative would be to use an outright hard-hitting physical attacker, preferably a Choice Bander like Slaking. Or maybe Swellow or Dodrio with HP:fighting. Or a stat upper like Gyrados or Groudon. Seeing as how most powerful physical attackers are all ready fighting types, this category is small.

Exploders can OHKO her, but they must sacrifice themselves as well. However, if they do this on the verge of death, after sweeping/shuffling two pokemon, the Exploder will still have the upper hand.

Toxic might really hurt Blissey. It would force her to use up the PP for Aromatherapy to stay alive. Of course, she could easily deal with this problem, if she had Rest.

There is one single pokemon that really poses a real threat to Blissey: Blaziken. Can’t be burned, and can Brick Break if she has Reflect. Also can set up with Swords Dance and most likely OHKO Blissey before she can counter, unless she has Focus Band. And even if she does hang on and KO Blaziken, she’s slow, and when left with one HP will be easily killed.

I hope my little “essay” was helpful and accurate, if you have anything to add, or inaccuracies to point out, please do so.
